I agree. With that being said we all know how they reacted to cartoons, why would someone be stupid enough to shoot a Koran? I have no problem with people even burning one; but given the circumstances now is not the times.

I saw a video of the "protests" and there are about two dozen people being paraded in front of the media and one or two guys conducting them like an orchestra. Wonder how much they were paid to be bused to the protest. Now that it has received so much media attention, don't be surprised if your friendly Iraqi neighbor Ahmedijimbob becomes indignant and fatwas start flying around.

This is standard third-world tactics to grab attention and is used in the West during election-time for a similar effect of demonizing the opposition by appealing to their baser instinct. As Obama is finding out about Jeremiah Wright.

I have a much bigger problem with everyone being afraid of doing things like this than the actual act of doing it.

They desecrate the Bible all the time, burn them, use the pages as toilet paper etc? the Quran deserves no better whether they like it or not, screw them!

The problem is that our troops are in the line of fire every day.

They're in an Islamic nation as foreign occupiers.

Sure, they can technically shoot whatever book they want.

But the question is, is it really worth shooting the Quran if it inflames the local population and puts your fellow soldiers at higher risk?

They have plenty of things to shoot at over there; shooting at the holiest object in Islam has one simple purpose...to incite anger.

I'm sure most Muslims respect the Bible as a religious text important to many people, even though it is not what they believe. Maybe extremists don't, but they are out there anyway.

The point is that treating the Quran with such disdain is highly undiplomatic. It's also just, well, rude. Free speech is great and should remain in effect even when people are offended, but diplomacy is more important in this case. Even if there was no fear of retaliation, it would still be right to apologize. I am sure many non-extremist Muslims were offended by this incident, even if they aren't going to kill someone for it.
