They say a picture is worth a thousand words -- but in this case, a picture is worth tens of billions of dollars in market share. Nielsen has broken down its US smartphone market share stats between November and January in two dimensions -- by market share and by platform -- and stuffed all that data into a single block of mesmerizing color. It's interesting to see the Apple and RIM juggernauts flanked by two imposing, red slivers of HTC, isn't it? The research firm also took a look at platforms by age group; the shares are surprisingly consistent across the board, though Android does have a slight edge with the young'uns. Follow the break for that chart.

RIM is still right up there.

only reason anyone still buys blackberries is that they are given away on contract. now that android has matured some, expect it to finally kill off RIM

eat least 1/3 of blackberries is now occupied by idiotic youngsters who buy them for texting.

they have no idea of BIS or any of the email features... they probably even have work where they use exchange server and would never know how to set up their BB.

There's almost no difference for any of the smartphone users. Most people that buy smartphones of any kind hardly use the smartphone features. It's just the way it is.

Things aren't looking pretty for nokia, the symbian is bound to FAIL. I hope nokia can put some real phones, not just pretty hardware with crap OS.

Well they've never been big here in the US. They've always been huge everywhere else.

Wrong.

RIM is the only company that can do email well enough and simple enough to work in a corporate environment.

This is true. BES just kills anything else for email currently.
Email push on iPhone and Android still lags compared to how quickly BES can push it out. But that's really all BB are good for now. I hate using it for web duty.

IMO, market share calculation in smartphones should be done via manufacturer, and not OS. Saying that Android is the best selling OS is true, but many firms use it. In reality, Apple is still on top.

I'm surprised about RIM/Blackberry though. Blackberrys are common largely because people use them for BBM. In general, IMO Blackberrys are largely inferior smartphones, and have none of the features of HTC, Apple or Samsung (the best quality suppliers, I feel).
