I am entertaining the idea of retiring outside of the USA. My wife was from Korea, we might move there for a while.

Well... I'm not going to deny wanting some options... but actual planning? No.

At this point I'd rather just move to the most friendly / compatible States.

China, Hong Kong, Uruguay, Chile, UAE, Monaco, there are many great places to move. Depends on if you need a job or not and how much money you have.

and you live there now? If not, what's keeping you?

\when in HK have respirator on hand....

If I am still alive next summer I will go to England where I lived before for two years in London earning a living as an illegal alien. I even got to spend some time in prison with a nice hard bunk and a hole in the floor. I loved it there. You get to walk down the street saying sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry. I earned many many times the average wage at times and washed dishes in an Italian restaurant almost for free. I think they were Mafia and I scared the crap out of them, an American working for peanuts and always smiling and actually washing the dishes. It was beautiful and I always smelled like garlic. 13 hour days.

When I returned, I came home a stranger and all I saw were Americans waving American flags, so absorbed in fanatical patriotism. It was sad but funny. Travel changes the way you see things. It rubs off the rube. I want to take a look at village life in Cymru.

Do you have some specific medical condition that causes you to write this?

No, I just like to keep my awareness of my mortality close at hand. It helps me to be thankful for what life I have left.

I would love to move out of the US of A.

Not for any silly "OMG! POLITICS!" kind of reason, although there are enough stupid people on both sides of the aisle to perhaps make that a valid reason...but rather because I'd like to go live on a South Seas island for my remaining years...Have a nice cozy shack on a beach...far enough up that MOST tsunamis aren't a threat...yet close enough to hear the waves crashing on the beach at night...

Otherwise...fuck it...I'm here and I'm staying.
(especially since I'm "passport challenged.") :D

I need a few more years to get my youngest on his own feet but I'm not sure if things will go that way. After that maybe we'll meet in some far away place. Who can say?

I'd consider going to a more civilized and socially advanced nation. I'd consider Australia, New Zealand, and the Scandinavian countries if they would take me and if language weren't a barrier.

I picked yes.

I worked and lived in South Korea for 2 years. I was also able to visit Thailand for about a month. I am currently home in NJ and I don't care for it here anymore.

If you have the chance you should leave America. Your world will open up. You will see that thee quality of life in Asia is on par with what we are used to in America. The big plus is it's so cheap! Unlike America living in Asia is dirt cheap and you can save money.

Sure, although it would not be for political reasons. Melbourne is awesome, Banff is amazing, Cheju-do is fantastic. Of course I'd be fine living in Monterey or San Clemente, CA as well - I'd just do my best to ignore what the idiots were doing in Sacramento.

You can buy a beautiful house on the beach in Thai for $75,000 USD, eat mango for breakfast and have a live in maid for $100 usd a month.

Try to do that in America.

I do think about it periodically. Not seriously, but I have gone so far as to look into likely places. So far, New Zealand sticks out, since I like varied terrain, seasonal weather, and I'm too old & stubborn to be bothered with a new language.

By the way: Expats are still subject to Federal Income Taxes, though you may receive Limited credits or deductions for local taxation. You have to give up your US citizenship to avoid US tax burdens. Google-Fu also indicates Canada and most European nations share social security information to avoid duplicate payments.

I have traveled a decent amount for work and pleasure and have never felt the urge to leave the US. My old company was about to move me to Austria before I decided to leave. Switzerland, Austria, or Sweden/Norway are the only countries I think I would consider...but I would still want to return to the US eventually. Now living in CO...I couldn't ever imagine leaving.
