Ummm, we cant even keep our jobs and gasoline prices have risen exponentially, forcing EVERY physical product we purchase to shoot up in price.
Quit crying about the fucking internet, most of you whiny babies have broadband.

Population density...South Korea has it.

Shaw Cable is rolling out 250mbps cable internet in Western Canada this fall. Western Canada has much lower population density than most of the US. It's not an excuse.

100mbps is already available.

Sure. Let's stay static in our broadband development. That's a good plan.

Be careful what you ask for, with the take one step forward, two step backwards approach that the US so overwhelmingly adopted as of late... you may end up with 200mbs down but get like 5GB/month for $30. :\

Yikes. I realize the US is a large country spread out all over but we invented the darn thing, the best we can manage is 26th place?

The speeds have slowly been increasing but it usually isn't that cheap. From what I've heard, some cities/municipalities run the internet for residents and it sounded like excellent speeds for reasonable prices.

And what's with hotels and terrible internet? I stayed a week at a Comfort Suites then the next at Marriot. Speed tests said 0.5mbps which should be enough for online gaming but no way. 500-700 pings in 2011 when I could get 300 pings with dial-up in 1995... D:

My parents were stuck on dialup until 2004 (they moved). The cable company would simply not invest a penny in their area since they only had 1000 families living there. I should look up if they can get broadband today.

What I won't buy though is the complete inability to have high speeds in high pop areas.

I was in Europe and they sell a usb modem for $15 for a month of 7Mbps wireless internet. How can they do that and we can't?

i had to use wild blue satellite internet from 2005-2007 until qwest finally put in DSL. and im just 30 miles NE of Denver. before Satellite i used dialup. so yea going to satellite was a huge deal for me and when DSL was finally available i was so giddy i didnt know what to do with myself. like a little kid on xmas knowing that big box under the tree is exactly what you have been wishing for.

right now i pay $50 bucks a month for 7Mbps. what a ripoff.

Time Warner Cable in West Los Angeles: 15 Mbps (their turbo plan) for $55 a month ($45 for 7Mbps)

Thought their internet was pretty standard throughout, just signed up for 20mbps for $50/mo with the included WiFi modem and no contract. 15mbps was $40, no WiFi. I'm in La county La Puente.

Verizon FiOS here. I had the 35MB (40MB actual) and down graded to 25MB (30MB actual). I think that's plenty fast for what I need to do when I'm actually home. I also have the HDTV thing and phone as well. I like it.

Broadband is horrid in the US. Whenever the local government thinks about laying down affordable fiber optic with reasonable speeds in the areas where the other providers are taking the community for a ride, Time Warner seems to call in all the big campaign contribution debts and kills the legislation. F!@# them and their attempts to keep costs sky high and speeds snail slow. No one is impressed with the whole "Up to" speeds that exist only on paper.

FIOS allocates 5Mb/s for HD and VOD services. You are still getting 25Mb/s but you get your extra 5Mb for you other things, so if you watch something on demand you can still get good internet speeds.

The current low speeds per dollar in the US is probably from Comcast, Verizon and the like to allow for 'room for future growth', slowly offering slightly higher speeds using tiered pricing.

Fucking MBA's sit in a room and think these scams up.

Yep. In fact here's another statistic: US among world's top countries for paved roads for the same reason.

Time Warner offers several tiers of cable FWIW, the fastest in some areas is a 50 mbps/5mbps and it costs $100/month. Otherwise their regular plan is 10-15/1 for maybe $50/month and 15/2 is $60 and 30/5 is $70, but it is market dependent.
