US poverty on track to rise to highest since 1960s

The ranks of America's poor are on track to climb to levels unseen in nearly half a century, erasing gains from the war on poverty in the 1960s amid a weak economy

Poverty is spreading at record levels across many groups, from underemployed workers and suburban families to the poorest poor.

The problem is that the tidal wave of low-wage jobs is dragging us down and the wage problem is not going to go away anytime soon

They're obviously leeches who haven't read Ayn Rand diligently enough for become wealth creators.

Why hasn't record government spending belayed this poverty?

Yessir! these poor should have just went where the money was spent and joined the military.

Where is your patriotism OP? Have the poor sign up for the military. Problems solved.

umm the dems have been in power for the past 4+ years. how is this still republicans fault?

This is that the end result of "Hope and Change".

You need to recognize that you have a child-like perspective- short sighted, nothing beyond immediate gratification.

This situation has been brewing for 30 years, and is the result of enormous shift of income to the tippy-top. It's the way Repubs want it to be. WTF did America think would happen when we slashed taxes at the top, repeatedly, suppressed Labor, offshored, automated & substituted EZ credit for wages, substituted financialized bubbles for real growth?

That we'd get magical trickledown benefits from people who wouldn't piss on our heads if our hair was on fire?

Free trade is not free.

Someone ends up paying for the offset in wages and lost jobs. And that "someone" is the middle class.

Last election I voted for McCain... I can't say I'll be doing the same this election for whoever is in the Repub seat... it's obvious what our country needs right now.

(Coming from a Moderate)

What this nation needs, is for the voters to remove the 2 major parties from office.

It is time for some real change.

Poverty in itself is not and never was a bad thing. Lack of savings and using debt as a cover for decreased living standards helps make poverty seem worse than it is. For most people, they could retire in their fifties if they chose to live their 20s and 30s in poverty. They could gradually increase their living standards throughout their forties. But of course most entitlement minded americans dont believe in that way of thinking. Rest assured, there are people around the world who are willing to work through decades of poverty to have some wealth in the last half of their lives.

Working for minimum wage is going to let me retire in my 50s?

How does that work out?

This is new news to people? Of course as a county the US will continue to get poorer as more and more jobs are outsourced or displaced via technological advancements. It is unsustainable to think you can have an ever growing population and ever shrinking amount of jobs available in this country.

We had a 70% and up tax rate on the upper class back in the 60. There should have been no poverty to compare to.

More Rich Republican success.

This trend started back in the 70's. Blame Carter

From your own link:

Year Congress President Senate (100) House (435) 2011 112th D D: 56-42-2 R: 241-193 2009 111th D D – 57*** D – 256

dems having full control past 4+ years not found

I never said FULL control.

I just said they were in control. IE have 2/3rds or more of government power.

Mutt Romney will fix all of this on day 1 when he gets elected.

We are on day 1280 with Obama and it's hard to find many stat better than his first day.

I know, things were much worse than anyone imagined. It's all Bush's fault.
