Washington pledged up to 50 million dollars in relief and reconstruction aid, US Ambassador Ryan Crocker said. "The magnitude of this disaster is utterly overwhelming," Crocker said. "We have under way the beginning of a very major relief effort."

Flights carrying rescue teams and supplies arrived in Islamabad (Monday), including eight US military helicopters from Afghanistan.

Many people complained that the US initially offered only $100,000 in aid to earthquake victims. This was further inflamed since Pakistan offered $1 million in aid for hurricane relief just a few weeks earlier.

Given that it takes time to authorize large sums of money, I personally was not surprised at the low number promised initially within the first hours. I figured larger pledges of money, equipment and personnel would come later after reports came in detailing how much money would actually be needed.

Does this pledge change the minds of many? Is this number still much too small? Should the US govenment pledge even this amount for people who are so anti-American?

How much of the pledge money actually gets there? Don't we still "owe" Iran pledge money from that Earthquake last year?
