don't we do these kinds of things on a regular basis?

Yes, they are called maneuvers. The OP wanted attention I suppose.

They are basically large scale military drills... i dont see how this is war related other than its a military exercise.

dirtcheapguy, I'd love to see your reaction to REFORGER, Bright Star, Ocean Venture or NukeEx drills from the 80s.

You know we formerly transmitted Flash traffic in the clear over ECCCS to sites with nuke warheads just to scare the hell out of the Russians, don't you?

The OP wanted an excuse to use the OVERLY used term of 'neocon'. It's overuse definately reduces its effectiveness, so please carry on.

I disagree. We had a stunning display of ignorance by the OP.

More "showing the fleet" than "sabre rattling". Impressive and slightly intimidating, but hardly aggressive or provocative. Also helps evaluate and improve battle readiness of the units involved. Likely as much of a show for China as N. Korea.

The military has been having exercises all the time in many areas. For instance every Year the military has an exercise in both Northern Alaska and in the area of Japan and South Korea. This has two purposes. It helps military officials become familiar with possible areas of confict and it shows our enemies we are ready to repel them should they attack. It is like a show of force and a military training operations.

In North Korea they do similar things. They use to line up their Tanks like they were going to come accross the border (Demilitarized Zone) and just make a sharp turn right at the border. It was a show of force to show us they had a resolve to fight also and can not be trusted. We had similar actions in the ocean near Libya a while back.
