Well, this past week I found out that my little brother, who's now 24, has been given a USN contract for EOD. He ships out to begin the various steps of training in a few weeks. Needless to say, I'm very proud of him. He's worked really hard towards this over the past year or so, he originally wanted to go for SEAL, but I think he realized that this offer of EOD was a good opportunity for him, and he's going for it.

So now I've got to plan a party for him as he leaves civilian life behind for a while, and I wish him the best.

Anyone here either have USN/EOD experience or know someone that has? I'm kind of curious as to how his deployments and such will work, etc. He doesn't have a place to leave his Jeep or a lot of other things while he's gone, so I'm thinking about renting a parking space and storage unit for him.

Any ideas of handy books/gifts/etc that I can either get him or offer as suggestions to friends and family who might be interested before he ships out?

Also, please no P&N in this thread :) Thanks so much!

Erasable Optical Disc

That's the issue when you post some acronym that isn't well known.

Sorry about that. I was primarily hoping that I would get answers from people who would by virtue of personal/work/military experience have some insight to offer on it, and those people would already know what EOD is.

That's terrible, sorry to hear it. Hopefully Navy EOD isn't as dangerous.

I don't have any hard info to back this up, but I think Navy EOD's are involved with different work than the Army EOD Hurt Locker type stuff. Hopefully someone will be along to clarify.

Regardless, best of luck to your bro.

Army and Navy EOD do basically the same job now. The Navy will focus on water, while the Army does not.

He will be deployed once he gets into a unit. He will be doing EOD work and not something else.

I hold EOD techs in the highest regard and I served as a Medic with a light infantry unit. While the infantry do love their medics, they love EOD even more.

There is nothing like watching some dude walk up to "something" in the road and kick it. Then pack explosives around it and walk back. BOOM.

Your brother is going into a very task oriented slot and I hope everything goes well for him and that he passes the training. We need more EOD types.

Awesome thank you! Also thanks for your service. Did your training do well transitioning out of the service?

While he'll be trained to do Navy EOD work (ie disable explosives underwater) he'll end up deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan in a joint billet, doing the same thing that Air Force and Army EOD guys do: disarming and destroying IEDs.

It's a dangerous job, which is why it's one of the few that still pays out sign on and re-enlisting bonuses.

I never remember working with Navy EOD.... That being said they are great guys, we stopped using a big 155mm artillery shell as a door stop in Fallujah when the EOD guys told us it still had it's primer and was live.
