WTF?

REPORT IN A LOCAL US newspaper said that a Magnequench unit in Valparaiso which specialises in so-called smart bomb technology is to be outsourced to the People's Republic of China.
The Valparaiso unit makes 80 per cent of rare earth magnets used in smart bombs.

The proposed move has drawn a storm of protest from local politicians Pete Visclosky and Senator Evan Bayh, who are calling for the House Armed Services Committee to review the Department of Defense (DoD) contracts with Magnequench.

I'm surprised the gov't would let this happen. It has to be either an error in reporting or an error in judgement.

What next? Farm out the armed services?....Wait they already have a fast track system inplace for citizenship for phillipinos and mexicans who join up.

How is that not a win-win situation for both parties?

Walmart dominates the American retail landscape b/c Americans prefer cheap Chinese goods to be sold to them by cheap American "retail consultants".

Maybe they can fast track a few enemy insurgents or Phillipine terrorists into the armed forces. That would be a win win for Al Qaeda.

Hiring mercenaries with the payoff being citizenship. A real win win for both parties. Bush gets to start wars based on lies and use an inexhaustible supply of third worlders who will do anything for US citizenship.

Heh. If US citizens finally wake up and oppose Bush he can just do what the British did during the Revolutionary War - hire mercenaries. Maybe some day he can even turn them on us.

I don't really see what the problem is. A component of a weapons system is being outsourced to a Chinese controlled consortium. Big freaking deal. If it was classified or would give away secrets, it would never get past the export reviews. The US military, hell the entire US economy would be screwed if they couldn't get components from overseas for a lot of systems. It's called globalization. Get over it.

Maybe we can get them to sign a contract where the Chinese will build, transport, and detonate Nuclear Devices.
We could get them to do it by hand, fully eliminating the cost of sophisticated delivery vehicles, say a few thousand
people form a bucket brigade and carry it to the designated target. They could probably get bargain prices for the
things from North Korea, we could just pay for the logistical mechanisn of deployment - contract it out through Halliburton.

Bank accounts know nothing of sovereign borders and national security.

If China decided to take control over the manufacturing of these components how quickly could another source be up and running? Hopefully faster than our ability to drop the bombs needing these parts, eh?
