NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - U.S. employers added far more jobs in October, the best performance in six months, according to a government report Friday that came in well above Wall Street expectations.

The Labor Department report showed a net gain of 337,000 jobs to nonfarm payrolls in the month, up from the revised 139,000 gain in September. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com were looking for only a 175,000 job gain.

The unemployment rate came in at 5.5 percent, which despite the big jump in jobs was up from the 5.4 percent rate in September. Economists were expecting the unemployment rate to stay at 5.4 percent. Top of page

The anti-Bush and leftist crowd will counter by saying that all the jobs are much lower paying. Al Sharpton did it last night on O'Reilly.

Shaprton then also said that "unemployment was at an all time high" which was a funny slip up.

Wrong, as usual. When are you moving out of this country anyhow?

1) Numbers are seasonally ajdusted.
2) Consensus was 175K. this is a great number
3) 71K came from hurricane reconstruction. Of course, you're too dense to research the numbers. Who's brainwashed sheep?

Owned.

However, the news of job growth is some welcoming news.

What's the difference if they are high paying or not? Minimum wage should be $50K per year right? Because you can not raise a family of 4 on minimum wage, right?

This is some of the best news one can imagine, short of oil dropping to $25 a barrel. :)

I'll be the market will be very bullish today, no? I hope we don't see a lot profit takers jumping out. It's time for a good long run UP. :)

I agree..

IF the market rallies over 100 points today..That would be a 3 day total near 400..

Excellent news, and i look for oil to continue to drop. That should only add to the upswing.

So, 71,000 are temporary jobs?

That still leaves 260,000 jobs which is still a good number.

Good month, but he'll need to run a whole string of good months together to say it was "Because of Bush"

Its good news and bad news. All of the questions in the thread are answered in the link!

367,000 new people wanting work, 337,000 new jobs. Thus while the number of new jobs is good, it isn't enough. Unemployment rose from 5.4% to 5.5% as a result.

The good news here is that payroll increases are accelerating - possibly going above the number of new people looking for jobs if this trend continues. But, announced job cut plans are at 1.5 year highs., meaning this trend may not last and October may have been a fluke.

Wages are increasing slightly - up $0.05 an hour on average. That is a 2.5% annual increase or about the same as inflation typically is.

Of the number added, 21,000 were retail.

A few things to note. These are payroll jobs only. The numbers never say anything about the self owned businesses. They may have increased or decreased, the numbers don't state that. For one thing, my wife added one job to the self-owned business list not reported in the numbers.

So a net loss of jobs. Nice.

See my added information in the edit. The numbers don't include many self employeed people. So we don't know if there was a true net gain or loss of jobs.

No, it's a positive post about the economy. Do you honestly think Bush is directly responsible for these jobs?
