<< The White House Monday night announced that President Bush had denied Garza's petition for clemency, which argued that the federal death penalty is biased against minorities. Garza is Hispanic. >>

Please. Considering only one of the two people in the last 40 years to be executed by the government is Hispanic, that's a bold statement to make.

Okay, I'll save others the trouble of writing a post:

1) He got the easy way out.

2) the death penalty is only based on revenge, not on justice.

3) a labour camp would be a much better place for such people.

4) do you've any idea how expensive the death penalty is?

Elledan> I don't think the death penalty is for revenge. I also don't think you should post for everyone elsa either! Perhaps criminals won't commit certain crimes if they know the penalty is so final. Perhaps you'd feel different if you had a close one killed by a scum bag.

I would talk to him/her if I would get the chance. Try to get past every mental defenses s/he has so that you might find out what is troubling him or her.

I don't do revenge.

Who said it's revenge? I thought I made my self clear.
I wouldn't want that person getting out ever again and doing the same thing.

Two words: Labour camp.

I'll give you a million bucks if you can escape alive from a Soviet style labour camp.

<< Two Words: Increased taxes...to pay for your utopian camp >>

Labour == money == profit

The death penalty only costs (lots of) money. If those 'criminals' have lost every right on protection from the Government, why shouldn't they be used for something useful? Killing them is not exactly efficient.

Do you have any idea how expensive a labor camp would be??

I think we could make the death penalty much cheaper by turning the sick bastards over to the victims family. I feel it is for justice, but even if it is for revenge, it's still the right thing.

Killing unrepentant murderers is a hell of a lot cheaper than keeping them alive until they are in their 70's making license plates. Jeez!

Yea, high quality of labor you have there...with all the outsourcing being conducted in state prisons now, why are they still in the red? Housing these animals is very expensive (Cox Cable and weight rooms with nautilus equipment doesn't grow on trees)...show me a prison that is able to operate solely on earned income, and I'll listen to what you have to say?.but I do dig your archipelago-style camps for less serious offenders J

I'm sure we could find something useful to do with their dead bodies----you wouldn't have to worry about feeding or housing them then. That would be efficient.

By making the death penalty cheaper than it is now, it'll become much more unreliable. This will result in more innocent people ending up at Death Row. Not a pleasant idea if you ask me.

A Labour Camp can be profitable, or cost only a small amount of money per prisoner (less than keeping them in a heavily guarded jail). In both cases it'll be cheaper than prison and the death penalty. Already 40 years in a heavily guarded prison is about as expensive as sentencing the same person to death.

oh, and yasha, care to tell something more about your escape? ;)

The death penalty is not cost-effective. With a 'small' case, it already costs millions for trials etc.

40 years in a heavily guarded prison costs only something like $400,000, while a single execution costs like 10 times more.

I swear...ignorance. If any of you had studied anything about the death penelty then you would realize that it costs MORE money to sentence them to death than it costs to keep them in jail for life. I know this is hard to understand but it is TRUE. People who are sentenced to death spend tons more money on appeals and tie up the court system. They waste so much money. It would be cheaper just to keep them in jail for the rest of their life.

I personally don't care either way except for the fact that it costs me more money to kill them. I think that a labor camp would be a good solution.

Slipperyslope> You do make a good point but I think it's more about Justice and prevention than cost.
