Yes and good. I am all for this, I am also all for boycotting any future Olympics simply because they are a corrupt organization and as of now the only places that can house them are deplorable countries.

A boycott sends the message that countries won't tolerate hostage diplomacy or it's horrible treatment of minorities. Isolating China is the most effective weapon there is.

So much this.

China hosting the Olympics is like Bill Cosby hosting a dating game show. No one showing up for the audience or as contestants doesn't make Cosby more of a star, sorry.

Would these Olympics be one with Chinese characteristics?

I'm thinking they def have an advantage for the 400m Freestyle Organ Harvest, and the Sterilizing Uighurs With A Shock Baton Relay probably wouldn't be competitive at all.

Agreed wholeheartedly, an allied bloc boycotting the games would actually backfire IMO. The Russians will be happy to take the medals crown and China would absolutely enjoy posting its best ever Winter medal count.

And agreed that besides the litany of other geopolitical issues, fair economic competition is the one we need to deal with most. Unfortunately our hands are completely tied while they manufacture many of our consumer goods.

Japan is supposedly still hosting the summer games in just mere months, so I don't see why Covid-19 would block the winter games. Worst case they can ban all spectators, and they'll be happy to show the world how to do draconian restrictions if that's what it takes.

Unfortunately our hands are completely tied while they manufacture many of our consumer goods.

Your hands are tied with chains forged by your own selfish greed resulting in an economic race to the bottom that has and is eroding the middle class, infrastructure and everything else that made America great,

the Chinese, pardon the pun, capitalized on your Achilles heel, your greed is good, profit only matters, cheapest is best, buy it now pay for it later mentality,

Also spending trillions in the Middle East War on Terror while going woke and destroying your country, culture and heritage from within was an added bonus.

But Biden thinks punishing American athletes Jimmy Carter style will show those evil commies he means business.

If there's a boycott, I hope it doesn't lead to more aggressive action by China. if I were Taiwanese I'd be worried.
Well, ya'know ....

Can you explain to me why you think manufacturing things wastefully and inefficiently is a good thing for America?

How many posts before one of the posters who constantly bitches about China calls this just worthless virtue signaling?
it's not?

America has 25% of the worlds prison population and still has this as a law, whataboutism blah blah...

Thirteenth Amendment
Section 1

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

LOL now the State Dept. looks like buffoons. Sure, it would be a PR debacle if the U.S. and ALL of its allies boycotted the games, but like I said China would still host it and athletes from Russia would be happy to dominate the medals count against non-Nordic countries.

Back to the economic question, Walmart is fully integrated with Chinese manufacturing and American consumers have benefited greatly from cheap goods. But I don't personally care if socks, apparel, and $200 TV sets had to be manufactured in another developing country and our costs went up. For all the dumb shit Trump did in general and trade warring in particular, his tariffs did spook U.S. firms to shift some output out of China. But right now, our economies are too intertwined for us to impose tough sanctions beyond trade tariffs. Apple has no Plan B if China orders all Foxconn factories shut down, and it would take them a year to stand up new factories elsewhere if that was even possible. It would take some time to weaken China's integration in the global economy, and some experts question if that's desirable or even possible.

I'm not saying it's hopeless so do nothing, but that we need to work with our allies instead of slapping Trump tariffs on them too. Pursue all legal and political remedies available. China's isn't the type of regime that would respond well to a boycott of the 2022 games.

The only people left who care about medal counts are wearing diapers at this point.

So, is the widespread state backed cheating from Russia harder or easier to pull off in China? I can't decide.

Olympics or no, I think any American is foolish to venture into China at this point, especially those with any current or past connection to the US government. Already had your data hacked via OPM. Beijing is only getting more and more belligerent, good luck not being "detained."

I figure The Olympics belongs to the athletes. The ones who qualify have earned the right to participate. I will not promote taking that away from them as a political statement. There are better ways to get the right things done.

If it's not safe to go to China for The Olympics that's another matter, of course.

Yes, I realize that the CCP does terrible things. It's not like Russia doesn't do terrible things and the Sochi Olympics went on anyway. Moscow Olympics too.
