Well I know that link is full of crap... Romulus airforce base in NY is about 2 hours from me... My uncle worked on the base for a while and they have 8 jets fully loaded on standby 24/7, and yes, that was also before 9/11. with full staff to have them in the air within 15 minutes... My cousin was a mechanic at Andrews Air Force Base on Sept. 11th... They had 6 fighters deployed within 20 minutes of the attacks... I have always known BBC to be one of the most unreliable news sources on the planet, this just proves it...

I highly doubt the accuracy of that article. I think its unlikely we would have a mere four aircraft standing by.

That article makes it sound like we have no air capability at home at all, which isn't true at all.

Still, it's very curious why it took so long to scramble coverage over DC and NY. Of the all places in America you would think those locales would be very well protected.

That's bull. Up here in Duluth we have 12 F-16 jets on hand(even before the attacks). Out of these 12, 4 are ready to be deployed in 15min or less. The next 4 are guaranteed at under 20min I believe and the last for can either be down for maintenance or ready to go. On a side note they have full air-to-air armament ready for all of these planes plus reserves. I know this because I am good friends with a guy who works on ECM pods at the Airbase and I work with a guy who loads weapons on the F-16s at the base. Oh yeah and if you're wondering why Duluth a small town in Duluth has it, its to keep the Commies from comming over the North Pole and lighting us up with long range bombers.

And how do you do a suicide mission with a fighter jet that has an ejection seat?
They would only have to eject (very) shortly before their plane hit the other ...

Since nobody knew the hijacked planes were going to be used as missles until after the second one hit the WTC, it is kinda hard to play "what if" games here. The only thing we can do now is to try to ensure that it does not happen again.

I for one would like to know what is being done to protect me and other Americans from a new attack.

Does anyone have a link or two for articles that show how much safer we are now than we were before 9/11?

No the possibility was known to the intelligence community on up the chain 'o command. It just was never seriously considered. Welcome to the forums, btw. :)

Where do our 'allies' (and I use that term loosely) get off on just making total crap up???

I live in Texas and down in San Antonio, TX there are seriouslly like 4 or so Air Force bases in that area alone. I would wager good money they have more than 14 aircraft down there.

the entire US mainland was being defended by only 14 planes.

I mean, holy cow, do they mean 1,400 maybe? There are Naval and Air Force, not to mention Joint Reserve Bases all over the country.

What is worse, twisting facts or just plain making stupid stuff up?

It doesn't matter if they have 100 jets. If there isn't one on the tarmac fueled, armed and ready for take off than we are just plain f*cked!!!

15 mins to get a aircraft in the air? Doesn?t do no good.
I believe it was 9 mins later that the 2nd jet hit the 2nd tower of the WTC.

Doesn't matter. No sitting President (Well, maybe FDR or Teddy Rosevelt...) would've authorized the shooting down of a passenger liner with the sketchy intel they had on 9/11. No General (Today, at any rate. Patton might have...) would have had the depleted uranium b@lls to shoot down a passenger liner.

That attack made a German blitzkrieg look like molasses in January. We'll be ready for it this time, but no one could really anticipate airplanes taking off from local airports and crashing into the WTC.

lol:p couldn't u with all those formation flying skills settle down on a wing of a jumbo jet and kinda push it down? i dunno. seems less insane then smashing into it:p u'd figure they could arm one or two missles quickly:p not that it matters anyways. better to just keeps sams around the capitol i suppose.

BBC is usually full of crap articles with a few actual quotes now and then. They also have a huge anti-america bias.

so really, with the push one wing tip idea.. u could turn or send a plane out of control right? that or u just crunch a couple of its control surfaces in a bashing spree, i'm guessing you could still eject after u messup ur jet. or am i undestimating the toughness of the plane:p

While I agree this is unlikely, I would strongly encourage those with specific information about any but the most general and publically released military capabilities not to discuss it on a public forum. :)

You should brush up on what actually happened on 9/11. The order was given to shoot down the flight coming to DC, the plane crashed before the shot was taken (of course the conspiracy theorists on the web say it was shot down). From a USA today article on the day (you can find a zillion references to this, it's not denied by anyone) "The president made the decision on my recommendation as well," Cheney said. "If the plane would not divert, if they wouldn't pay any attention to instructions to move away from the city, as a last resort our pilots were authorized to take them out."

That attack made a German blitzkrieg look like molasses in January. We'll be ready for it this time, but no one could really anticipate airplanes taking off from local airports and crashing into the WTC.

Again, you should brush up on your history. Terrorists learned an imporant lesson in France when a few years ago they hijacked a plane and demmanded the pilot ram the Eiifel tower. The pilot simply said no. Terrorists kinda figured they should probably learn to fly themselves after that...

Don't worry, anyone who really knows anything knows to keep their mouth shut.
