US Armed Services Ranks

Can someone post a list of the various armed services ranks in order? For example, does a Brigadier General rank higher than a Admiral? Yes yes I know they're different branches of the government but there has to be a way to tell who ranks higher than whom.

go by their pay grade, which is the best indication of rank. Officers start at O-1, and enlisted men at E-1. In answer to your question, no, An Admiral is O-10, the highest peacetime Navy rank. A Brigadier General is O-7, the lowest general officer in the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. He would be equivalent to a Rear Admiral.

ed: as for that link, I'm not taking in to account warrant officers and such. If you include only officers, the pay grade is the best way to compare.

example for the Army:

Second Lieutenant(2LT)
First Lieutenant(1LT)
Captain(CPT)
Major(MAJ)
Lieutenant Colonel(LTC) <----- my dad!
Colonel (COL)
Brigadier General(BG)
Major General(MG)
Lieutenant General(LTG)
General(GEN)

Just to specify, and in case you didn't see my link, he'd be equilvalent to a Rear Admiral, Lower Half.

yeah (sorry, didn't hit your link till after my post 😱)

Nice and confusing. That chart made some sense of it! So if you're essentially the same rank, but in different services, who salutes who first? Is age a factor?

It's cool. What does your dad do in the Army? The highest up I've known was a 2 star in the Coast Guard; I worked with his son.

Branch or service doesn't matter as far as saluting goes.

Same doesn't have to salute one other, however, saluting
is showing a respect to a senior officer, when in doubt salute.

When I wore CPO uniform with gold anchor, I had lot of young marines
saluted me simply because at distance, they couldn't distinguish the
differece between anchor and oak leaf, so instead of taking a chance
of not saluting an officer, they saluted me, instead of laughing or making
smartass remark, I've always saluted them back and corrected them in a
pleasent manner.

Age also doesn't matter, it's rank that counts.
