Jon M. Huntsman Jr., the U.S. ambassador to China, sent a resignation letter to President Barack Obama on Monday, the White House said. Huntsman now is likely to explore a Republican presidential bid, according to supporters.

In a letter hand-delivered to the White House, the former Utah governor said that he wants to return to the United States by May. The letter thanks Obama for the opportunity to serve the country and praises the U.S. embassy staff in Beijing.

If Huntsman won the GOP nomination, he would be challenging the reelection of his former boss. White House officials are furious at what they consider an audacious betrayal, but know that any public criticism would be likely to benefit Huntsman if he enters the primaries.

Huntsman boasts the most foreign policy experience of any of the likely GOP candidates, and would be a formidable entry to the unformed GOP field. He had a fiscally conservative record as governor, opposes abortion and is a strong supporter of gun owners’ rights.

The ambassador has moderate views on gay rights and the environment, which would be an asset in a general election but could be a hurdle in the primaries. In a campaign, Huntsman could be expected to point out that he has created jobs in both the private and public sectors.

Huntsman, 50, resigned his governorship in 2009 after Obama named him to the Beijing post. The move was seen as a coup by Obama’s political team, neutralizing a potential opponent.

He may form an exploratory committee this spring, with a final decision expected by summer. Allies have begun building the nucleus of a potential campaign.
on paper, his bonafides seem pretty impressive. Politico's been abuzz about him all weekend.

I could easily see him being a strong challenger to Obama in a general election as a palatable Republican, but he's going to face a stiff challenge in the primaries.

He does sound good on paper. Taking a job which pads your resume only to run against the man who appointed you does seem classless though, especially since Obama said such nice things about him when questioned about Huntsman running in 2012.

So far my Pubbie 2012 dance card has two Mormons on it, which is strange since conventional wisdom says a Mormon cannot win a GOP Presidential primary (or escape with his life in a Democrat Presidential primary.) I still keep hoping Rice will return to politics - now THAT would be an interesting match-up in 2012!

EDIT: Whoops! Better change that to four tickets. Herman Cain is going to run as a Republican rather than as a Libertarian, and the Rent is Too Damned High Party founder is going to run as a Republican. Mormons are losing ground fast in 'possumworld!

Or Obama appointed him so he'd not be a factor in 2012...which means resigning would be like un-stabbing yourself in the back. Just really depends on what all the true reasons Obama wanted him in China...and no one but Obama and possibly his close advisors know that. So it's all speculation...

I'm not crazy about the abortion thing, but he's not anti-gay and he's has a good idea how the Chinese think, who will be a real PIA in the not too soon future.

Obama better hope he isn't the one he runs against.
