Sounds fair to me. It obviously wasnt an accident since he was drinking the water at the same time. He had to have known it was against policy. (although 100K seems a little steep...)

Who knows though.. maybe the company paid him a million to do it.

I'm willing to bet that the fine is being paid by VitaminWater, but still....

Imagine all the publicity for that company, especially since they knew it was going to be all over the news afterwards. They probably paid him $200grand to pull the stunt.

That's exactly what I was thinking, I'm sure vitamin water payed him way more than $100,000 to wear the thing, so who cares

Every player can thank a former Bear for this rule - Jim McMahon.

I can't believe that crap. I assume the league thinks Urlacher got compensated for it? But how do they know he got anywhere near 100k?

I don't think a top priority of the NFL was to make sure Urlacher would come out ahead after the fine.....

On top of that : I didn't even realize he had done this. Thanks for bringing it back up in the news months later NFL. This is silly since now I want Vitamin water, screw gatorade. That's right, urlacher's hat has me convinced!

also : I hope this wasn't just some stunt for more publicity, it's not like it's something the NFL doesn't get enough of....

read the link. thats the fine for superbowl crap.

"McCarthy said this is the first time such a fine has been levied. He added that $100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl"

because Urlacher would have to be a dumbass not to know how much the inevitable fine was going to cost him. OK, so maybe he didnt know, in which case he should have thought the plan through a little more.

Yeah, but now other advertisers and players know the going rate for regular/special games. Expect more players to wear branded hats.

Considering it says "$100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl", I think that knowledge was already avaliable to them if they cared to find it.

You know where the NFL's priorities are when they fine someone for wearing a non-sponsor hat 100k, but players that get caught for DUI's etc..only get fine 10k or so...

Meh - i guarentee that this $100k fine is the best advertising value they've spent. The media is blowing up about it and the exposure is great for them. Smart move - its a helluva lot cheaper than a 30 sec superbowl ad haha

A DUI doesn't upset the NFLs sponsors.

Are you confused? He was saying $10 to him = $100,000 to Urlacher. He's not pretending to be rich.

Yes, but maybe nobody realized that the player fined would have his picture spread all over the internet with their product's hat. For $10,000 that type of advertising is a bargain.
