URL bar not working in Firefox

I'm at my mothers and I'm having no end of problems with her version of Firefox. Right off the bat, her url bar doesn't seem to work. Neither hitting enter nor hitting the go arrow seems to take it to any address I enter in. Bookmarks do seem to work, which is curious. I also tried to install adblock plus only to find firefox couldn't modify files. (It's windows xp 32 bit and hers is the only account on the computer) I trying googling her issues and it suggested restarting firefox, which seems to resolve most issues while retaining data.

This allowed me to install ad block plus, but the url bar still doesn't work. I then tried starting firefox in safe mode with all add ons and themes and junk disabled and this too did nothing to fix it. Then, after restarting firefox again, I found adblock plus was gone. As if it had never been installed in the first place. What the heck? Probably looking at the scrapping of her entire data and a reinstall at this point, but what the hell's going on?

I'd try disabling Avast to see if that fixes it. It might just be that particular version of Firefox that Avast has a problem with, or Avast is blocking URLs and your mom disabled it's popup notification. I would probably create a separate Limited account for her to browse though, or a Linux distro on dual boot if you're feeling ambitious.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new profile and see if the problems follow. If you don't know how to do this:
Click the run button in the start menu.
Type firefox.exe -p

Hard disk could be failing. Download HDTune (www.hdtune.com) free edition, and run a surface scan, and check the SMART data (under the "health" tab).

Is there some reason she's still on XP? I upgraded my mom to Windows 7 several years ago.

I don't have the money to buy her a brand new computer and it's too old to justify dropping a Benjamin on a new OS. She just uses it for web browsing and email. I'll try the suggestions though once I have a free moment. I got Chrome working for her in the meanwhile. What could the hard disk have to do with it?
