He has a good point. I think they should take it one step further and drug test them too.

Like a lot of folks in this country, I have a job. I work, and they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem.

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes
to people who don't have to pass a urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them??

Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get
back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with
helping someone sitting on their ass. Could you imagine how much money the country would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?????

Agreed

How would one go about setting this kind of thing into action?
Outside of starting a Myspace spam bulletin?
But then the government would lose money on the drugs they are selling....

should randomly insert a hair sample test as well. I'm sure its more expensive but can't be beaten as easily as the urine test.

I would personally like to see the government and employers butt out on what is done in my free time, but since that is not realistic, this would be cool too. Drug tests aren't free, BTW...

They might pay for themselves in this case, since fewer people would qualify for welfare.

I think determining whether they can make peepee should be sufficient.

I thought this was kinda old; I remember reading this exact suggestion. I agree with it, nonetheless.

I think drug tests are fascist....probably the only people (if any) that should be required to take drug tests are bus drivers...airline pilots etc......

Just a bunch of fascist christian moralism if you ask me....

Uh ok. So you're fine paying some coke-head to keep his habit up each month? Drug testing may be fascist, but welfare is communist.

Is there a drug test for cocaine?

Yes, it is part of the "NIDA 5". The detection period is 48-72hrs after use, while long term habitual use can increase this time slightly. False positives can result from liver/kidney infection, the antibiotic amoxicillin, or diabetes. Funny how these drug test witch hunts never face the facts that standard urine tests are no where near 100% accurate.

And a few people could stand to open their minds and check out erowid.org. Lots of good info there, and I have found it to be mostly unbiased.

I dont agree that my work place should be able to regulate what I do no my free time by doing random drug tests. If I have an accident, or something goes wrong at my work place and they wish to test me to see if I was high at the time, fine, so be it. I screwed up and they want to cover their asses (ie. workers comp).

Captain Howdy. Urine tests do have false positives that will be ruled out with a blood test. If you come up positive (and you know you are clean) you can request a blood test which will have no false positive. The urine test is accurate enough. You would have to be an idiot to request some blood drawn if you know you are just going to fail.

I agree in spirit but the reality is completely ridiculous.

Are you going to withhold money from people with kids? Ok... druggies shouldn't have kids so the state will take over on that one and send the kids to foster parents or an orphanage. The parents? Well, on the streets with your junkie ass...

The slope is very steep and very slippery. And it completely ignores the fact that the author of the letter in the OP's link has the right to find a job where he isn't drug tested.

There is nothing wrong with welfare. Sh|t happens. Bad things happen to good people. We are a compassionate society. America has TONS of money. (Say what you will about how the government spends it... that's another issue) There is no reason why we shouldn't help people who fall on hard times or can't take care of themselves.

Now... people who game or cheat the system... people who have no intention of ever getting off of public assistance... people who call it an "entitlement" instead of a helping hand... I have a problem with those people. But the answer doesn't lie in cutting them off.
