Hi guys,

I'm battling with my sister's PC and the sound- everything's installed okay, all drivers updated (believe me, I've tried every driver that will work), all updates, latest DirectX, yada yada, you know the score.

Windows thinks that the sound is installed correctly, and nothing seems out of the ordinary, but no sound is heard from the speakers :|

I've tried the onboard audio. I've tried an old SBlaster 128 PCI. I've hit it, swore at it, tried all manner of voodoo tricks and it still won't work. I've even tried headphones and a seperate set of speakers.

Can anyone help? Any replies are greatly appreciated, I've got to get this sorted ASAP!

(BTW, XP SP2, all updates, no spyware, Duron 1.8Ghz, 256Mb)

Cheers :)

Check that digital out only is not/is checked in ...

Volume control>Options>Advanced controls>Advanced>Digital out

This may or may not pertain to your sound problem but was a stickler for myself in the past with a sblive card.

Checked, it's not on.

And, to make matters worse, I've now lost the speaker icon in the system tray and it won't turn back on :| :| :|

Try removing the sb card, reboot, disable onboard sound in bios, boot with no card. Shutdown, reinstall card in a differant slot and reload drivers.
Which im sure you have already done.

Sadly, yes I have.

I've kinda given up now, she'll have to drop it in to my place sometime for me to reformat & reinstall.

Thanks for the help though :)

Seriously, I have too. You should check. My Audigy has like 5 or 6 ports in the back. Sometimes I'm not paying attention and I put it in the MIC port of the one next to it. Whatever happened to just one plug for audio???? oH well..

I think you need to give more info on your problem.

1- Is this a old system that was working fine and not working now, as you added hardware?
2- Is is a new system that you put together?
3- What other cards if any, besides the sound card?
4- Have you diagnosed its not any of the hardware one at a time?
5- Does everything work fine and stable besides the no sound?

If you have diagnosed its not hardware, reinstalling should resolve the issue.

Most of problems I have seen with sound blaster cards is if the card is working-

1- The card not being in the correct pci slot
2-Not liking other pci cards(like a usb card I had)- it had to be in certain order for it to work.
3- Conflict with onboard sound.
