ill be brief. im trying to add a new harddrive to my inlaws computer. it is a gateway P5-200, purchased in 12/97. it is a p200, 64m, 3gig hd. im trying to add a maxtor 40 gig to give them more space.

the bios and fdisk will only see 8 gig of the hd and im not sure how or if I can get the pc to recognize the whole drive. is it possible? would I need to update the bios? we have added 20 gig hd's to some computers at work but I cant remember if the bios sees the whole thing or if we just add the rest under windows 2000 (which im not adding to this computer)

thanks for any help, it is appreciated!

you have 2 choices

1) update bios (if you can find a bios update).

2) you can get "disk overlay software" type stuff that will "trick" your computer into seeing all the space

the bios update basically will update your IDE controllers and what not to let them overcome the 8 gig limitation that is all too common on old school machines.

that's the best route, but if you can't find an update, let us know, and i can point you towards some overlay software

thanks alot for the responses! I appreciate the help. I would like to see the link to that disk overlay software if its not too much trouble.

I might just say "screw it" and give her a 10 gig and keep the 40 for myself :)

you can go to maxtor's site and download theirs. look around and you should be able to find it, let me know if you have trouble
