URGENT question - putting both IDE and SATA HDDs in the same machine.

Ahoy, mates!

I'm putting together my secondary system, with an ABIT NF7-S motherboard, and two HDDs.

The way I see it, I want to have the main HDD (120 GB) connected to IDE1 as Master. and I'll put a second HD on SATA 1, using the Serillel adapter.

But I want to put Windows 2000 on the 120 GB drive (IDE1), and I don't know if the machine won't try to boot from SATA first, if I install them both. Because, of course, if there's no OS installed on the SATA drive, the machine won't work.

So my question (which the manual won't answer) is - does the motherboard give OS priority to the SATA devices, or IDE?

unfortunately, I can't figure out the BIOS settings for this operation... is there anything else that needs to be modified, besides the boot sequence?

I think it should just be boot sequence, but you'll also need a copy of the SATA device drivers handy (on a floppy) so you can install them before you install your OS< on Windows won't pick it up.

I think it should just be in the BIOS though.

Yeah, should be a BIOS option. The NF7-S for sure should have it.

Here's a better question, why have a SATA drive as a storage drive? 🙂 Make it your main drive.

I'm running a system with an SATA drive as the boot drive, with an IDE drive as a second drive. The only thing I had to do to keep it booting correctly was set the boot sequence. It automatically sets IDE as the main boot line, I had to go in and set it to the SATA drive after I added the IDE drive. You probably won't have to do hardly anything at all in your case then. Not sure if you'll have to install the SATA drivers when installing on the IDE drive or not.

I agree, why use IDE as boot drive?

I'm not sure if this is the case with the NF7-S, but most boards use the "SCSI" option for controller cards. You can find this in your boot sequence menu.
