So I was using my computer and everything was fine for a few hours and all of a sudden I get a lockup. There was nothing I could do to gain responsiveness so i did a reboot by hitting the reset button on the case. My setup is as follows:

core 2 duo e6600 (dual core)
xfx 680i LT motherboard
mushkin hp2 4gb ddr2 ram (2x2gb)
western digital caviar sata 640gb hdd - main drive with windows
seagate 500gb sata 7200.10 hdd - storage drive
external western digital hdd - storage drive
asus dvd-rw sata
sapphire radeon 4870 1gb
asus xonar d2 soundcard
ocz gamexstream 600w power supply

I have owned the setup for about 1.5 years, with only the radeon / ram / soundcard being newer parts (got the radeon a few weeks ago and the ram/soundcard in august)

Now when i try to boot the computer (i have also cleared cmos so everything is stock) the POST says "detecting IDE drives..." but I do not have any IDE drives, my dvd drive is sata as well as are my hard drives. It sits on that "detecting ide drives..." for about 5 minutes, then it goes to boot, but whenever it tries to boot from anything it just then freezes and is stuck there unless i hit the reset button or flip the power supply power switch.

So far I have tried multiple hard drives, changed out the ram, tried booting with only cpu+motherboard+ram+graphics card+one hdd but with no luck. I suspect that something is wrong with the motherboard but i am not sure as i do not have another s775 motherboard to test with.

Any suggestions or help? Thanks.

When you cleared the CMOS did you go back into the bios and readjust your settings?

I've seen this kind of problem with a CMOS reset and the user didn't reset the system's date and time. Also you need to make sure the BIOS is looking at the right drive as the boot drive.

Mine detects my SATA drives when it says "detecting IDE drives". The first and easiest option is always to open it up and reseat everything, ram, cards, cables, etc. If it's dusty, you can take care of that while you're in there. My friend's PC wouldn't post a month or two ago, he broght it to me with a 12 pack of Guinness for my trouble. I reseated the ram and hit power, took all of 10 seconds to fix it. That was some good beer ;)

yeah i went back in and readjusted my settings, except for any overclocks, i just left the computer at stock afterwards. My 640gb drive is the only drive that is bootable and I have set it as the default drive to boot to. The date and time is correct as well. I just cant boot to anything, the computer will freeze right when it tries to boot to something. I have also tried to reseat the ram, addin cards, but not the motherboard. The computer was working fine before but after it locked up on me, this just happened.

Thanks.

thanks for the reply BTRY B 529th FA BN, i do not have a different psu so i went and picked up a new motherboard today, and it works!

For some reason my motherboard will not detect my 500gb seagate though, is it possible the old motherboard took the hard drive with it?

the hard drive doesnt show up in the motherboard bios where it shows the sata devices, will sea tools be able to detect the hdd if the bios wont recognize it?
