Hi, just got myself a NEC Versa S900, but i don't know how to connect it to my desktop computer to get files.

I just want to copy files from the one i am using to my notebook.

I bought a coax cable. but dont' know how to setup a network using it..

Both are using Windows XP pro, one is English and one is Chinese.

If you don't have a hub/switch/router, you can just get a cross-over network cable, then connect the two NICs. You'll have to have the IP addresses set to be compatible (something like desktop 192.168.0.1 - notebook 192.168.0.2, with the mask 255.255.255.0)

If you've got a hub/switch/router, just use a regular network cable. You'll still have to set the IP addys, unless you let a router do it through DHCP.

I assume you mean a CAT5 network cable, not coax? If both machines have NIC's, just connect them with a network cable (available anywhere) and run the network setup wizard in xp. It actually does a very good job, especially if you have no network experience. Then if you have problems, come back and post. Going into a complete how-to on setting up a network is beyond the scope of a thread on here.

It's actally very easy with xp to do what you want, just use the built in features...:)

If he just uses a crossover cable between the two machines, he doesn't need to worry about any IP addys or anything like that, it sounds like he's new to networking so just running the setup wizard will have him up and going in no time without haveing to worry about it.

Run the setup wizard on the main pc, it will creat a disk to run on the laptop the will configure everything automaticly....

Hmm -- I guess I didn't realize that you could cross-over without setting the IP addy... if so, boshuter is right, faye!

never, never, never run the network wizard, that thing is as buggy as a stirred up ant mound. if ip configuration is too complicated then simply install netbuei, if you're only needing it to transfer files between one and the other a cat5(a or cat6) crossover cable is fine. I'm confused why you have a coax cable, are both the laptop and desktop using 10base-T nics or perhaps token ring? same principle applies but the data transfers will be slower than 10/100 ethernet nics and you'll need terminators if it's ethernet. (If it's a new laptop, it almost certainly has an onboard 10/100 nic. and if your desktop runs winXP odds are it too has one, or at least you can install one in an open pci slot if you don't have a nic.) I am curios about the language issue's though, will they auto translate, or do they both have support for both languages. I mean, will you even be able to access english text on a chinese version of XP and vice versa?

Hi Guys.

thanks for the input!!!

i somehow manage to install files from my desktop. I just follow the XP network wizard to make a Network Bridge (MAC Bridge Miniport) connection.

then i just make the files/ directory "share available", then on my notebook's network neighborhood, i see that directory/files in the share folder. now i can just install the files from my desktop.

my next question. If i want to make my notebook internet available. what can i do? can i just buy a hub or a network card?
cuz now i am using the network card(DSL) i use to get on the internet to link up both computers.

my notebook support centrino. can i just buy a wireless network card for centrino so that the base(desktop) can get on the internet through the wired dsl cable and then my notebook uses the wireless network card (from desktop) to connect the internet, is it possible? or do i need a router? it is quite expensive.

thanks

Get a wireless router. Search the Hot Deals forum, they are almost as cheap as the wireless network cards these.
