hey,
as a safety precaution i read from a website, it said to change the username of Administrator to something else that is not default. so i did that, and after a few weeks, i rebooted and tried to sign on my computer. but i forgot my username and password, so i am locked out of the computer. i think if i get the username i can get the password easily, but i dunno what the username is.

is there a way to figure it out? thanks

I don't wanna laugh, but that's pretty funny...

Honestly, I don't believe there's a way for you to retrieve it. I suppose you could try and hack your machine with some sort of username/password cracker. I know those utilities are out there, but i haven't a clue as to where to get them or even how well they work. You may need to reinstall... sorry

I think you're a script kiddie (not a very smart one obviously) and you want to hack into your girlfriend's computer. Or maybe some computer at work. Or something of that sort.

Go find yourself a better hobby, kid.

If you haven't figured it out by now... nobody cares what you think :(

lucid,

Why are you gonna come down on this guy for a simple question? You can go to hell quite frankly.

dud2k,

The legitimate way to do so would be to re-install Win2k and more or less "reset" it that way. There are several other ways to do so, but they would be a little more difficult and a little more questionable. You can look on the 'net for other ways to do it, but again, reinstallaing Win2k is the best, most "legal" way to do it.

Given the assumption that you're the "true" owner of the box....

Is it on a network? If so, there may be some hope for you. If not, install a second copy of W2K (to a different directory), and then crack your original SAM. (user database)

Linux can help you with this problem, or atleast it could with NT 4. Do a search for trinux, which is a floppy version of linux. If I can remember where I downloaded it before while changing an NT admin password (for a friend who got the box from a friend all legit really ;)) I will edit this. Good luck. (This is assuming of course this is really your machine and you are not some stupid script kiddiot, there are better forums for that).

L0phcrack will not work on W2k unless they have a new version. Windows is 128-bit encripted and L0phcrack won't work on that. If it is on a network, you could get an administrator to fix it. Probably have to re-install. You might be able to re-install W2k to another directory.

L0pht doesn't work? I was pretty sure that we tested it, and it did work--on local machines.

You cannot change user names only delete and recreate. Administrator cannot be deleted and you can't disable the Administrator account so log in under that and redo the other account. I think you maybe up to something. Not at bad catch Lucid.

They took that functionality out? I remember changing the administrator login to root in an NT class I took...

You can rename Administrator. Its advised to do so, if you're worried about people with local access to your machine because a person gets unlimited tries at the password for the Administrator account, unlike other accounts which can be dsiabled after x many attempts.

of course you can rename admin, every machine in my company has a renamed admin user.

You can also kill the password and reset it back to blank, you need a W2k boot disk (of what every the target machine is running). Then all you have to do is delete a file, I can remember which it was but I think it was a *.sam file.

l0pht only work if the password is transmitted accross the network or if it has access to the SAM file. Cracking the password will only take a max of a week (generally less than a day) if the Windows machine has LAN Manager passwords (used for Win 9x compat.) still enabled.
