My computer was overheating so I put the mobo and cpu in a new antec case. I also put on a new heatsink and fan. I tried to connect everything the way it was but now my computer doesn't turn on. I thought my powersupply died so I bought a new one but still no luck. The only thing that I did was change to the alpha 8045 heat sink and the new fan is a three pin that connects to the power supply instead of the mobo like the old fan. I tried disconnecting the powersupply to everything except the mobo but nothing. When I turn the powersupply switch on the back I can hear a faint humming sound so I think it's getting electricity but the fans don't turn. It's a new powersupply so it can't be the problem. Did I blow out the mobo during the transfer to the new case? What can I do to diagnose the cause? By the way, I'm using a epox 8k7a mobo with an amd 1.33 ghz cpu. I made sure to add thermal paste to the cpu before putting the new heatsink on. Please help. Thanks.

Yes, I didn't forget that. There's only one connection to the mobo, correct? Everything else connects to drives?

unbolt the motherboard and put it back in. something might be shorting. if that doesn't work take the board out of the case and put it on something non-conductive (like a plastic or glass cutting board) and plug it into the PS. short the power switch connector on the board with a screwdriver.

also check all your jumper settings also drag the manuall out and read through it you might have overlooked something really simple!aftre rereading your post for the thrid time I came to the conclusion that the sound that is coming out of your power suppy must be its own fan ! I bet you have your power switch and reset switch wires meesed up do you have the manual for this board? what kind of board is it ?

I double checked everything. Since I simply transferred from one case to another, no jumpers should be affected. Also, the humming sound isn't the fan because I can look inside the back of the powersupply and see it's not turning. Anyone know why the powersupply doesn't turn on if it's connected to the outlet? Why should the status of the mobo influence it? BTW, it's an epox 8k7a mobo. Thanks.

I have a feeling your front panel connections aren't hooked up properly.

That switch on the power supply DOES NOT turn on your computer. You have to connect the case's power button to the correct plug on the mobo. My buddy here at work had the same problem...no power. He swore he had it plugged in right. He was so upset about it, he brought it up here to work. I went out to his truck, grabbed the manual and verified he HAD plugged it into the WRONG spot. The power supply gets its signal to turn on from the mobo, not that switch on the back of the power supply. However, most mobo's will draw a 5V Stand By (5VSB) signal for wake-on-lan and other features.
