Urgent: How to record sound (ONLY) from VHS

I need to encode audio only from a vhs tape. I have the dual audio port converging using a splitter the other way and am able to hear using a headphone.

I originally thought I could plug the splitter into the microphone connector on my mobo, but I am not able to hear any sound on my computer. What should I do?

I have tried the microphone using yahoo messenger. Yahoo recognizes sounds coming from my mic, but total recorder isn't able to recognize it.

Total recorder is working perfectly for sounds from within a system, like a mp3 file I have on the hard drive. But not sounds coming from my mike. So in essense, my question would be how do I record sounds coming from my microphone on my computer? Thanks.
