Me and my buddy need to transfer a file. He has a file thats about 2 GB that I need. We both downloaded SmartFTP. How does my buddy send it over to my PC? How does he host it, or w/e?

Thanks

2GB is going to take a long, long time. I don't know how to transfer from PC to PC b/c I use SmartFTP for websites

a few questions and solutions

Do you have a router or switch?

Or do you have a crossover network cable?

You would need either or to make the transfer.

I am assuming you are using windows for this.....
Do you have file sharing enabled?

If you want to use ftp for it, you'll need to get a ftp daemon for this, I would recommend serv-u

The PCs are 2 miles apart.

I can have him get serv-u, and then what?

are you both behind routers?

If so, you'll need to do some port forwarding, whoever computer is being the server

Or you can use something like IRC/AIM/etc which allow you to transfer files...

Plenty of options, some more secure than others. Google is your friend (for now, until they own your personal info).

My friends and I use Hamachi for this and playing LAN modes of games. Incredibly easy to set up and once it's going, it's as simple as Windows filesharing. Will still take some time to transfer 2GB but that's not what Hamachi does.

Do you have a 2 mile long patch cable? No?

Install Apache2Triad. It should set up a server on the source computer automatically, then you just need to put the file in the appropriate folder.

EDIT: WTF? Put the file on a thumbdrive or DVD and make him fucking walk/run/drive to your house. It's 2 miles, come on.

Slightly helpful:
Download WinRAR, and add the file to an archive. Set the compression ratio to "Storing" and split it up into volumes, maybe 250MB each, thereabouts. That way, if anything goes wrong, like a connection reset, the entire 2GB file doesn't need to be re-downloaded - assuming that the FTP or other file client doesn't support resuming.

Ok, maybe not slightly helpful. 🙁

Yeah, burning to a couple CD's and walking would have been much quicker, especially if you picked up a 6-pack at a grocery store along the way to share. 😛 😉
