used ati tool 0.25 beta to overclock my x1900gt put the memory frequency up to 1200MHZ the rated speed of my graphics card memory in hindsight it must of been because it was ddr so i should of have it at 600 to begin with. distinct smell of burning, system switched off, switched it back on screen gone yellow!?! HEEEELP

How can you even hit 1200 with ATI Tool? Mine only goes up to 1050.

Well, you probably did yourself wrong. The clock speeds double when a 3D app is detected. I don't know what you mean by DDR either. The X1900GT is GDDR3. Is your bios even yellow or is it just windows?

I don't think he can RMA it, he toasted it by upping his ram speed to 2400 DDR

I think what he did was thought that the memory was only clocked at 600...He didnt realize it doubles itself to be 1200 effective. And he clocked the memory to 1200 which would have been 2400 affective. Oh my, if you smell burning, it doesnt look good.

ok ive had the machien of for a few mins! i put the frequency of the ram up to 1200mhz, applied it, screen went crazy for 5 seconds or so then machine switched off and i smelt or i think i smelt a sudden whiff of burning plastic... the smell only lasted for a second?

I instantly got on all fours and had the lid off within seconds... no burning smell all though the ram heatsink were hot to the touch.

i switched it back on and was met with a yellow screen. switched the computer off again for about 10 - 20 mins. back on my system now everything looks normal and games play as before.

what happened, what is just my imagination telling me i smelt burning plastic or is it possible something did burn but is still able to work?

When you run the games now ( after the smell ) at stock speeds of 575/1200.....Are there any artifact's, or any anomalies on the screen ? If not, you may be a very lucky person.

I seriously doubt you can fry your mem or even the gpu just by increasing the frequency. The worst that will happen is it will lock up/crash your machine and you'll have to reboot. These things usually fry either from excessive heat or voltage, not clockspeeds.

I have found ati tool very buggy with my x1900gt. Don't use it all. Riva tuner seems to work ok. Actually the overclock utility in the ccc is fine for the modest overclocks I occasionally use.

You can blow the memory if you clock it too high. Then it'll artifact even at stock/underclocked speeds, if not worse.

Yea unfortunately ATI Tool (beta 14, Beta 15, and Beta pre-16) isn't so hot for OCing ATI X19 cards right now. With Beta 14 and the 6.3 cats everything was PERFECT but that was a Windows installation, six months ago. Right now, I'm using a custom bios with custom fan speeds (for my custom cooler), and RivaTuner to OC my card to 725/830. Yes, I got luckyer with my XT, she'll run 725MHz at stock volts if I keep the core below 62C--which is easy to do with my setup, OCed I load at about 56C.

Sure you can. It's electronics. Heat generates instantaneously and you can easily fry your hardware. Hard to do, but I'd say 2400 MHz could do it. I even did it on my 9800 with a more modest over clock.

If you really fried something, then the small will limger for a long time, and you'll easily be able to small it on the card for days. Therefore, I don't think you really friend anything.
