URGENT, Help Please! Why my MAC has changed...(cable modem related)

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of setting cable modem with a router RT314. After I install the router and use ipconfig /all @ MSDOS prompt, I realize my Physical address has been changed to something else (note both computer has the same Physical address for the 1 Ethernet adapter but different for the 0 Ethernet adapter). I have given my ISP (COMCAST@HOME) the MAC address before I install the router, is this wrong? Which physical address should I give to my ISP the one before installing the router or after installing the router? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Every piece of Network hardware has it own MAC address (it is like a serial number).

When you connect through your Router, your ISP will see your Router MAC address.

However most Router can clone the MAC address of the original NIC.

Look at the Netgear manual you will find instructions for MAC address cloning.

Keep in mind that you also have 2 mac addresses...one for your internal and one for your external ports... You might wanna check your numbers and compare... 🙂

Please explain further. Now I am totally confused. Is the MAC given, when you run ipconfig @ msdos prompt, internal or external? Which one should I give to my ISP?
