URGENT HELP NEEDED WITH XP PRO

Hi,
can someone tell my how to disable the system file checker?
the reason being, i brought GTA3 and like most people have graphics corruption. the read me says to download a patch from MS, but when i run it says that i wont work with my XP.
i`ve managed to extract the files that needs updating from the *.exe, but when i put them in the relevent folder, they are instantly changed back to the older versions.

hmm, sfc isn't always on as such.
you have to actually run it from the cmd prompt to "turn it on"!

yes, but how do i turn it off completely so i cant come back?

and then, how do i turn it back on?
