Windows-bloody-2000 has converted my backup folder with all my work related docs files etc into a file after detecting it (the folder) as having an error. This happened during boot up and it didn't even ask me about it.

I'm f**ked if I don't get it back.

I can't even begin to search for an answer coz I have no idea what Win2k did in the first place.

My BACKUP folder has turned to "backup" file and there's a folder called FOUND.000 with lots of "FILE***.CHK" files inside. There must be a way to convert it back.

For the love of God.. SOMEONE HELP ME!

you might want to search technet for a solution. Technet
It's usually pretty easy to find this type of solution there. I'll check it out in case you can't find anything. We'll see who find the solution first. :D

-edit-
I forgot to ask what's so important on these files that were converted? Have you tried using an editor to see what's if you can salvage any information from them?

If you can find out what type of files they are, if you just change the extension on them, it should be recoverable. Unless of course if it's binary. I'm still looking for a good solution. It looks grim right now. Most are saying it's best just to delete.

Now since this was your backup, do you still have the originals?

They are specific file for accounting, engineering softwares.. and the last backup was 3 months ago.. really pissing me off that Win2k did this without asking me first.

I'm thinking it's a scandisk operation.. I don't even know how to word the query to find the solution..

Fingers crossed that someone can help.. :(

This is usually done when scandisk is run.

As for the types of files, you might want to play around (depending of course on how many there are) and jsut try renaming the extensions on them and see what happens.

For the query I jsut typed in ".chk" and it came up with pretty much the solution I mentioned. Doesn't seem to really be anything out there that will find the home of these lost clusters. It's a bummer. I feel for you. I had lost alot of data before, seperate files never an entire folder though.

Oh man that sucks. I say you make a copy of those files and see what you could try to do with them really far away from the 'original' messed up files.

frizzlefry.. thanks for trying..

Most of the files are distributed among the network.. so I *should* be able to replace them with time.. but few files that I've been working on........ brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...........

I'm in the process of renaming the *.chk files. Only 1088 files.. so unless it's really f**ked up, I should get it back.... eventually......in theory.. :(

Thanks for trying tho.

DAMN I HATE microsoft for that.
They try to make their OS Baby friendly and f*cks everything after because it is automated.
At LEAST, when dos existed, you could actually copy the safe files on a directory and try to fix the others with scandisk. Nah, win2k instead comes in and converts everything to crap. Why do you think Unix based systems still have consoles. BECAUSE it is usefull !!! doh ! ;)

OK.... enough.. euh, try opening the files with all the programs you have to see if it will open. If not, try renaming (maybe you many many files... that would be long) and opening the files... AHHh, sorry, I don't have any other ideas.

Humm... and I wish you GOOD LUCK.
