Urgent Help Needed! Can't shut down!!!!!!

Uh-oh! Did I hurt my Power Supply? My computer won't shut down. When I select "shut down" it acts like it is going to shut down until it restarts right when it should be turning off. Please help! What should I do? I can't leave my computer on for now, should I just hit the power button?

Are you using Win98? Did you install the shutdown patch?

Do you have any USB devices? That may also be causing the problem. Unplug your USB device just before shutdown and see if that helps.

Just hit the power button for now.

I hit suspend to see if that would work okay and the computer froze! So I hit the power button and slipped off to bed. I have not turned that computer back on yet.
I could shut down fine before. What is this patch you speak of? And yes, I do have a USB mouse, but could that be the problem? Like I said, I could shut down fine before.

I think I may have crossed the 5V with a ground wire... did I destroy my power supply? ... :frown:

Anyone know? I still haven't turned on the computer... I'm worried about the PS freaking out and messing my mobo or something... should I be worried? is this even a prob w/ my PSU? Has anyone had this trouble before?
Thanks 🙂
I appreciate any help!

Nothing that would cause it to... oh wait... yeah there was that bit that I mentioned above about somehow accidently crossing a 5V wire with a ground wire... I thought the capacitors in the PSU would filter that out or something though... it did cause a bit of sparks... d@mmit, this is making me mad! lol... and I am too worried to try turning on the computer right now because I fear it might hurt something in there... any suggestions? Is it safe to turn it on?
Thanks 🙂

I turned it on finally... things seem fine... it did freeze up at one point... but I haven't seen any problems... I just read in another thread something about a "shutdown patch." Where can I find this?
Thanks
I'll let you know when it explodes.

My computer occasionally hangs and would not respond to pushing the power button or anything else. When that happens I just unplug the power plug. I had done this many, many times, and it's still running OK. I would guess there is no danger in simply unplugging the thing when nothing else would turn it off.
