I had kept a very important folder containing one of my very valuable documents on the desktop of my administrator account on the C drive install of windows xp.

I removed all the important files from drive c, and then I DELETED THE PARTITION (from Win XP Install option), formatted the partition using NTFS system, and reinstalled XP Pro in C drive.

Now, I need that folder on my desktop. It was very stupid, really stupid of me to have overlooked the desktop. But, I desperately need those documents. I havent taken any backups. Again, my stupiditiy.

I tried recovermyfiles.com 's reovermyfiles software, but, it though recovers many irrelevant smal small files, it didnt find my file or any of the files in that folder in desktop. What should I do?

Do I have any hope?

Please, please help me...

Do not install anything more on this hard drive partition. You need another system to recover any files, either a complete second system, another hard drive you can temporarily install WinXP onto, or another partition you can temporarily install WinXP onto. Then install one of the programs below (or try each of them until you are successful) and run the recovery operation on the partition/drive you need to recovery data from. The important thing is not to work with the current system anymore since you run the risk of overwriting the files. I am afraid that the files are lost now anyways due to the reinstall. Files can still be recovered from deleted partitions and even a formatted partition but not often after a system reinstall.

1) R-Studio
2) GetDataBack
3) Ontrack's Easy Recovery Pro
4) Quetek
5) File Scavenger
6) HDD Regenerator

Yes, so you do not overwrite any more files in the partition/drive you wish to recover the data from.

Depending on your system, you may need to place the drive as a slave to another master drive. Make sure to adjust the drive jumpers as necessary.

You tried them all within 40 minutes? I wonder if you used them correctly or if you missed an option. Unless you have a tremendously fast system, it can easily take 1-2 hours just to scan a hard drive.

I prefer using GetDataBack. Try using that one and then follow up with R-Studio.

It bothers me with the speed in which you completed these and I feel something is wrong.

My C partition is small. Only 10 GB. That could be the reason. Yeah, I tried GetDataBack. It looked the most promising, but it didnt find the file/folder i wanted, though it found a few folders (unimportant) from desktop that others didnt.

R-studio demo with max of 64 kb was okay, my file was a rtf file, so must be around 50kb i guess, but it didnt return one.

So, bad luck i guess...

Was the C partition larger than 10GB before the reinstall? If the C partition was larger, the file could be located on the next partition.

I have not had success recovering a file after a system reinstall.

No no. I just deleted the partition of 10 gp, and created a new partition of the same 10 gb cause only 10gb was free (from the previous deletion)

My experience is on older systems. I have not yet attempted file recovery on a machine faster than 800MHz. :)
