*urgent* failed to install catalog files error

i am trying to install the patch 4 windows required for gta 3 + winXP + geforce and when i try to install it, after it checks the space, i get a "failed to install catalog files" error.

(i'm installing this on a friend's computer and since he has a small hd sp1 is not an option. furthermore, he only has 56K)

alternatively, can you fix the gta 3 issue with windows xp and geforce cards without installing a windows patch? does the latest update fix this?
