What kind of class is it? Unless it's a computer/IT course, you're probably just going to bore everyone silly no matter what you do.

line the whole class all up and make them hold handsand make a few people "virii", "DDoS attacks" and the like. Make the people lined up the firewall and try to have the virii run through it (make sure the virii are small people) Then make the "firewall" stop holding hands and have the virii try again - that should illustrate your point.
Btw, if you do this, you haven't thought for more than 2 seconds about this.

Throw (soft) stuff at people, then have a a guy hold up a poster board and stand between you and the class and throw stuff. Explain that he is a firewall and he protects the class from the internet

Have a little model wall with holes in it and throw some bits of paper at the wall that bounce off, that's the firewall blocking stuff and then poke some bits of paper through the wall, thats packets that are allowed.

There was a good video about networking in general that covers firewalls....but I cannot remember the name,...ah wait I got it based on a quote I remember from it

re are IP packets, Novell packets, Apple Talk packets
- Uh, they're going against traffic as usual

You can see more and download the clip here

uhhhhhh, is this an IFSM class?

what kind of a technical class would require you to physically demonstrate a technical piece of hardware/software?

Remember the little toy set when you had when you were a kid? It had a circle, a square, a triangle and a hammer. The board had similar holes. Use this as a demo. The board is the firewall, the shapes are packets that match criteria. Odd shapped objects do not pass.

Just a thought, you asked...

set one of the walls of the classroom on fire and point out that won't be the type of "firewall" you will be talking about today.

get one person in the class to be the firewall, and have other students try and run into him and get past

Your presentation sucks...

<-- just hacked into your network, bypassed security protocols, found your PC and downloaded your presentation.
