Hello everyone,

I need some help urgently.
I bought 1 stick of PC2100 256 MB RAM from Crucial (Crucial.com), and was unable to overclock it. Am I doing something wrong, or can it not be overclocked (so I should return it to them A.S.A.P)?

In general, how well does this type of Crucial memory overclock?

If you successfully overclocked this memory, please post any info!

I'm trying to hit 150 MHz on a 1.4 GHz Athlon.. Can't be the CPU, it overclocked in another system.

Is there a known OC'ing limit for the Crucial PC2100?

Thanks

All the jumpers and stuff? No way man, that's private! :)

Ok, well it's an MSI K7T-Pro 266 (the Via 266 chump set), basically the clock multiplier is at 1400/133 = 10.5, and it doesn't really POST if I run RAM at anything above 145 MHz..

I pulled all the extra hardware out of the PC. I overclocked before, I think it might be the RAM? I hear the Corsair overclocks way better than Crucial, is that true?

DisposableHero,

It's not considered "overclocked" unless it's on fire :)

I've heard the K7T/266 doesn't overclock well.

99% of Crucial PC2100 will do 150 2-2-2 without a problem.

I just found this site (is it me, or is Google losing its edge?) - www.ocprices.com - and it reviews a lot of memory products.

If you have a lot of time on your hands, take a look at those articles (in the left column) and let me know what you think ;)

MSI motherboards are not known to be good overclockers. They usually top out in the 140's. If you want a good overclocking motherboard, get an Iwill.

Return your RAM because it wont run 12Mhz beyond its spec's.

I like your thinking. :)

CAMS,

If you want things that run just up to their specs, buy a refurbished Mobo with a refurbished CPU on it ;)

I once returned a Celeron that wouldn't overclock more than 25%.

Having worked on a space station as well as in an underground government lab, I know what to expect of things :)

MSIs are good FSB overclockers, in fact. They dont just top out at 140s, their KT133A tops out at mid 150s, and I heard the KT266 being able to do up to 160.

BULLL

20% tops. pc2100 2-2-2 is a LOT to ask for on crucial, even with the +.4V the 8k7a will give you.

I have to concur.
Crucial is the cheap brand.
If you are seriously overclocking, Heatsunk Corsair PC2400 is the only way to go.:D

Look who's bulling? 150MHz CL2 is almost expected on the Crucial. Mind you that the Corsair use the same Micron chips.

Okay I looked at your rigs. Both use SDRAM. Yet you are an expert on the subject? (P.S. They are both using Kingmax ram)

150cas2 expected? I went through 2, and neither could hit 150 on cas2.5 and be 100% stable. Im not saying post at 150, im saying be STABLE.

Corsair tests and uses the higher end chips IIRC, or at least uses a more stable PCB layout. Your logic is not only flawed, it is poor and lacking.

I have 2 personal experiences, you have 0. I win.

Haha! Just because I dont own them doesnt mean that I havent used them. I went through roughly a dozen 256MB sticks of Crucial PC2100, in every occasion I have had sucess at 150 CL2, they're mostly on the MSI K7T266 Pro and K7 Master, btw. Now who wins, huh? More stable layout PCB?? Yea, my ass! Just what are you smoking? Are you a RAM designer? Everybody and his dog knows Crucial is the absolute best RAM maker in the world.

I think it's a waste of money paying an extra $30 for each of the two 256-MB memory sticks because for the same amount you can just buy a faster CPU _AND_ a better cooling fan, so the system will still overclock better than the more expensive but faster RAM.

I've gotta agree. My crucial oc's to 150 without a hitch. Matter of fact I can run at 160 2-2-2 except my geforce2 pro craps out on me. From what I've seen you'd be hard pressed to find a 8k7a owner who can't do 150@2-2-2. (can't speak for msi who, ironically, makes my geforce2)

in tests earlier this year the crucial 1600 not only was the only ram that could run on every ddr chipset, but it also ran just great at 2100, which other brands' 2100 ram couldn't do.
