By analyzing U.S. Census Bureau figures from 1940 to 2000, they conclude: A woman is more likely to get divorced if she has a girl; divorced mothers of only girls are less likely to remarry and, when they do, are more likely to divorce a second time; and parents of two or more children are more likely to have subsequent children if they have all girls than those who have all boys. The authors also found that this phenomenon has diminished in the United States in recent years.

?Each piece of evidence does not necessarily imply the existence of parental gender bias, but taken together, our empirical evidence indicates that U.S. parents strongly favor boys over girls,? the authors write. ?The bias is quantitatively important, but seems to be decreasing over time.?
