Uptime, new look on pagefile.

I know how to use the search button so you don't need to remind me.

I've had my system up for around 9 days now, witch is unusual for me. For the last few days I've noticed Windows has been hittin my hard drive a lot.
So my question is, what is an optimal pagefile for Windows XP Professional with 512MB of DDR memory RAID0 setup with 2 partitions (20GB & 60GB).

I want to make this next reboot my last for a long time.

Thanks for your help!

That's what Microsoft says. I hear a lot of ppl are using no pagefile. I just want to hear from people that have experimented what they think is optimal or not.

Thanks

Well page file acts just like memory, but ALOT slower. I'd stick with the the 1.5x. But if you dont want windows to hit the HD so hard, just make it half of what you already have in your system, and get an app that can free up memory space.

this file is good at freeing up ram, i know it works on 98 and 2k but im not sure about XP...all you do is run it when you get low on ram and it frees up some of it.....

Those people will have problems eventually, the page file is used for more than just freeing up memory.

I would load up everything I might run at once, see what the Commit Charge is in Task Manager and make my page file slightly larger than that.

I have always thought that certain programs require a pagefile whether it uses it or not. But as usual I could be wrong.

I tried going w/o a pagefile for a while but I got certain program errors and found it to be more of a hassle than it is worth. Supposedly WinXP does a good job managing memory and the pagefile, so I'll let it do what I paid for.

I run 512 Megs of memory and a set 256 MB pagefile on my second hard disk, and it seems to work well for me.
