exactly. i remember firsthand the cops acting like this in the 80s (bad personal experience), and i have heard stories from family/friends about cops being awful going back to my grandparents time in the 40s/50s/60s.

This +1

What you see here is an old school form of policing, what our parents, grandparents, etc. were used to dealing with. You don't fuck with the poh-lease.

Nowadays, we actually expect them to not violate our rights and treat us like some sort of extension of how a parent treats a child, but that expectation moved faster then the hiring/firing/retiring process.

All the people shouting "Omg OMg police are now out of control!" are just people waking up to what really happens (and what used to happen) on the streets. Cops used to treat criminals like thugs, and some still do.

With an attitude like that, the cop deserves to be killed.

Just an update, i heard on the radio while driving home from work this cop has now 'resigned' and formal charges have been brought against him. Also the 2 witnessing cops are under review for not stoping him.

Hell yes.

Sometimes I watch cop videos and they annoy me, they bother me, but this one really got to me for some reason. I think it was this fat pig's ability to combine several felonies into a one minute period, he did it all so quickly. The video was so uniquely damning of a cop acting like such a fucking animal. But that was only bad. What really made this worse was when after he had no contrition at all and said he'd do it again.

I had in fact intended to email the Sheriff of Saratoga county to kindly ask him what was going to be done about the other deputy who performed the search. I have emailed my local sheriff before and got back a nice response. These are elected officials, and I think they are particularly susceptible to getting squashed in an election due to the fairly small size of their areas. This has been a nationally spread event and hopefully the sheriff is going to show that he won't tolerate this at all and really put this pig out to the wolves so he can brag about it come election time.

Saratoga county paper: http://www.saratogian.com/general-news/20141110/videotaped-saratoga-county-sheriffs-deputy-resigns

He has been charged with official misconduct, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment charge, a violation.

NOT ENOUGH. Still, fat shitty man is now out of work, so it's not bad. Also hopefully gets a criminal record out of this.

Official misconduct and second-degree harassment. Are you fucking kidding me? Those are slaps on the wrist.

The cop committed battery on the man and forcibly took his keys and threw it to a fellow officer and commanded him to search his car without consent and a search warrant.

@Blanky, I know what you mean. This is actually local to me as I live in Albany and frequent Saratoga very often. I with I could say that this type of thing is exceedingly rare but unfortunately in my surrounding areas (such as Colonie, Schenectady, Scotia, Amsterdam, Niskayuna, Latham, and yes... Albany and Saratoga) this untouchable mentality is almost common place. I was very pleased to hear he was quickly charged with harassment and official misconduct, as well as the witnessing officers pending possible charges for allowing the misconduct to continue.

Something that really does not get reported is that almost the whole upstate NY is fed up with the way we are routinely treated by our local police officers and this type of stand off is very common, with regular people not bending over for Nazi cops. Locally there is a focused and public effort by police departments attempting to improve their image due to a vast history of such things and I am glad to see this case not get swept under the rug like many before it.

I too agree that people who are in a position of authority, selected and elected to enforce law, code, to 'serve and protect' should be held to higher standards. Who really knows if the charges will stick, and even so what then? For now he has lost his job, but what about his pension? Benefits? Any officer of the law that deliberately and eagerly abuses an innocent person(s), as well as tramples on ones protected rights, should be held severely accountable.

Glans told the paper. “If I had to do it all over again … I’d probably do the same thing. If I knew the camera was there, no, because it does look bad.”

"Knowing what I know now, if I had to do it all over again, I'd still do the wrong thing..."

Goddamn body cams on all cops can't come soon enough.

A cop cannot search like was presented here....it's against our constitution.

They can, and will. And if they find or "find" anything in the vehicle, will still arrest you. Will it get thrown out in court? If you are paying attention, then probably. But you're cost is still time and money to fight the bullshit.

Police are taught to ask questions in the way that gets them access to the vehicle and many people don't realize it.

yes alky, police regularly violate 4th amendment rights. being a good citizen means acknowledging this, and knowing how to handle it.

It's good the officer is being "dealt with". I'm not sure if the charges are harsh enough to send the message to other LEO's, time will tell.

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Saratoga-sheriff-to-discuss-viral-video-5883183.php

A Saratoga County sheriff's sergeant abruptly resigned Monday as he was charged with official misconduct and harassment after a video was posted on the Internet over the weekend that purportedly captured him slapping a man whose car he wanted to search.

Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo said his office began an investigation into the actions of Sgt. Shawn R. Glans immediately after they learned the video was posted on the department's Facebook page around 9 p.m. Friday. The video shows Glans demanding to search the vehicle of a young man, Colin Fitch, who was standing next to the deputy in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store in Halfmoon. Fitch refused to consent to the search as Glans peppered him with expletives and said they could get a search warrant if he didn't turn over his keys.

he is getting charged and has resigned. I hope the other cops get in some trouble for not reporting it
