Upstar 4K Monitor takes 30 minutes to display opening screen

I bought an Upstar 28 “ 4K monitor 3 years ago, but all of a sudden it’s now taking 30 minutes or so to start up from my Windows 10 PC…and this is with an SSD Drive startup. The Upstar logo occasionally flashes on the screen during the 30 minutes when it vainly attempts to display the opening screen. I’ve never had a startup problem with this monitor before, and I’ve tried everything I know to get it back to normal, but no dice. When it finally displays, everything is perfect. Their U.S. Customer Support is apparently non-existent. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the power supply in the monitor is going bad. It happens. More often in cheaper displays.

Have you tried that same PC with a different monitor, just to rule out that the PC may be having booting difficulties?

Does a PC monitor have a power supply?? And if it does, if it was going bad, would it only affect the operation by delaying the startup? Because once it displays the opening screen (after a 30-40 minute wait), everything looks fine.

Also, I do have a second monitor attached, via an HDMI cable connected to my HD TV set, and the TV set “monitor” starts up immediately when I turn it on, although the Upstar remains dark. As you suggested, would that indicate that the fault is indeed in the Upstar monitor, rather than “the PC having booting difficulties”?

I’m considering buying a Samsung 28” HDTV with HDMI ports to replace my Upstar. Is there such a thing as a higher definition HDMI cable? Currently, I’m now using an old HDMI cable on the 4K Upstar, but it’s only displaying 1920 x 1080 resolution as a maximum.

Depends on what your HDMI cable is compliant for. If it's only rated for 1.3 or earlier than it means no 4k content delivery. Also, it sounds more like a short in the cable than a power delivery issue to me regarding your monitor. Unless its the hookup in the back of the monitor where your power supply attaches to.

Hey, VirtualLarry: Many thanks for your reply. I took the powersupply/adapter/power cable to Fry’s (Giant electronics store here in L.A.) and they tested it and said it was indeed “bad”. They didn’t sell the same unit (in fact, they never even heard of “Upstar” even though I had bought the monitor there 3 years ago), so I went to the place that sells (almost) everything (Amazon) and bought one specifically for my Upstar monitor. (Two different ones were available) It works! No more half hour delays in getting my opening screen displayed.

Also it turns out that my HDMI cable (which does handle HD graphics) works just as well as the Display Port cable that I originally had connected. However the Display Port cable that’s connected to my monitor is “frozen” and won’t come out. (Any thoughts on how to remove a stubborn cable?).

Again, many thanks for responding to my post.

Well, most DisplayPort cables I've seen have a latching mechanism, something that I occasionally wish HDMI had. Inspect the end(s) carefully, you should be able to figure it out.
