The price is falling fast on 4K monitors.

IIRC, the lowest sale price I have seen on 27" 1080p monitors has been $130.

So this 4K monitor is $70 more for the higher resolution and extra inch in diagonal (or roughly about 50% more expensive).

So yes, the price does appear to be closing.

P.S. On Newegg by far the most popular sizes for 4K monitors are 28" followed closely by 27", so this may be the pixel density that takes hold.

Might be time to build. I've said for years I'll build a new system when a decent 4k display and video card to power it is under $500 combined.

Never heard of this brand. Anyone have experience with it before?

Would this be better than those Seiki 42" 4K TVs as a monitor? I read this only needs a firmware upgrade then you're good to go.

OP, Thanks for the share.

Brought one; going to give it a shot despite mixed reviews on Amazon/NewEgg.

I hope this works out for you.

It does appear this make and model of monitor has a higher than normal failure rate (eg, five out of the 25 Newegg reviews reported DOA or failure within a short time span.)

I bought the cheapest-available 1080P "monitor" available to me, which happened to be a Westinghouse 1080P HDTV with HDMI and speakers available at BestBuy locally for $99.99 + tax. Most comparable 1080P monitors (with HDMI and speakers) were $130+ at Newegg.

So I got kind of a deal. They've outlived their one-year warranty, and hopefully they continue to function correctly far into the future.

So, cheap doesn't always mean bad. They're TN, I think, but the picture is pretty decent. They do support 4:4:4 Chroma over HDMI. (At least, the AMD drivers support this.)

I think I will have trouble going to a 4k screen until they can do 144hz, or close to it. I know asus has some 4k 180+ hz panels out, but they are pretty expensive. I just don't care for 60hz as much as I do higher.

Granted it would be tough getting 144hz+ in games on 4k even with sli 1080s.

I got a upstar 32" Tv thats been going for years and has a decent image quality IMO. But your going to have lemons with every brand just will be more common with the budget brands. I'd jump on this but then I'd have to invest several hundred in a GPU to really use it. Even then in a year with new games I'd probably have to upgrade GPU's again, 4k is just to demanding. My next monitor will certainly be 1440p.

I bought a bag of budget citrus fruits from my local grocery store. When I got home I discovered that they were ALL lemons. Godammit!

Yeah, I was looking around as I plan on upgrading my GPU and 3-monitor setup in October, but 4k monitors are really lacking right now - both in specs and in connections, as in the latest DisplayPort and HDMI standards, which is pretty important for decent performance on 4k.

I have 27" WQHD, and honestly, 4k would be pretty cramped (and let's not start yelling "scale your UI!" because at that point the higher res is useless since that is EXACTLY why I want more pixels) - I'm thinking 36" would be a sweet spot, and might allow me to take 2 WQHD screens as side portrait oriented and still keep things roughly aligned.

I just can't bring myself to buy tech that is "almost there". I'll probably see if I can find a decent curved Wide WQHD (whatever they call the stretched WQHD) for the fall and worry about 4K in another couple of years.

Please give us an update once you use it for a bit.

Had it for about a week now. Overall I'm satisfied (I'm not picky).

A couple of tidbits. You must use DisplayPort [cable comes included] to get 4K at 60hz refresh rate. HDMI [HDMI cable included as well] does 4K but only at 30hz. The power cable is proprietary(not a stand AC cord) so if it fails, you might have trouble replacing it. The picture quality is awesome overall. There is a glass "finish" which is bad if you have a lot of lighting in your room; causes many reflections. My monitor had one dead/stuck green pixel. I'm not picky, so it's not the end of the world. I did notice a little damage on the bezel. It must've had happened before putting the bezel on the glass monitor because it's a little scruff on inside part of the bezel. No other parts of the monitor showed physical defect/damage. Took a while to get used to the high-resolution, icons/fonts look so tiny initially.

I bought an Upstar 28 “ 4k monitor 3 years ago, but all of a sudden it’s now taking 30 minutes or so to start up…and this is with an SSD Drive startup. The monitor light even shuts off for half a second at a time during the 30 minutes when the monitor vainly attempts to display the opening screen. I’ve never had a startup problem with this monitor before, and I’ve tried everything I know to get it back to normal, but no dice. I tried jiggling the DVI cables on the monitor and the PC, but they seem to be frozen in place. Anyone have any ideas?

You should create a help thread in the display forum if you need help. This area is for posting / discussing deals (not to mention this thread was last active over two years ago).

My apologies. I understand your point perfectly, and I agree with you. But the Forum did not provide the means for me to post a new thread, and I was desperate for some help with my problem with my Upstar 4K monitor. Their customer support, it seems, is now non-existent in the U.S.

Are you still unable to create a post in the section I mentioned?

I didn't know there was a "Display Forum".

That's why I mentioned it, and linked directly to it for you last night. ;)

How would I navigate there, and if I'm logged in, would I then be able to post a thread?

You either click on the link I provided, or go to the main page of the forums, click displays, and then hit "post new thread".

Many thanks, it worked! I've posted my thread in the Display Forum.
