Well ive been kinda looking at UPS's (back up power supply's) and was just wondering if any one had any that the would reccomend or any they wouldent, or any reviews on some. From the looks of it alot of mfg's lie on the battery live at X amount of usage. So any kinda review on any would be great!

Thanks!

Depends what you want the UPS to do for you.

Expecting to run a desktop PC and monitor and other gear for extended periods is not really feasible... though you can get UPS's sized for home under $200 that will run . My APC 1500 is currently dishing out 268 watts and says it will run for 27 minutes. I got a bunch of stuff on that one. So you could expect a UPS to run your system depending on specs for 45mins or more potentially, but you will pay for it. Additionally, allowing the UPS battery(ies) to run down to that level isn't a good thing fo rthe battery(ies) in general, causing them to sulfate if not recharged immediately - which will reduce their capacity for the next time power goes out.

The best reason to get a UPS is for clean power. I noticed that my blue screens and system lockups went away immediately once I went to a UPS with filtering and AVR (automatic voltage regulation), Also, My system stays up for the few seconds here and they that I may lose power, and I have the UPS software setup to hibernate my system after 5 minutes of run time.

For that reason alone you don't need a large expensive UPS.... I got one that was large and expensive because of a great rebate, and I have two sytems on mine.

Planning on getting a second UPS for my network devices... just in case the power fails during a data transfer.

Also... results may vary... but putting your cable modem on the UPS can be a shot in the dark. If your neighborhood loses power, chances are that the power supply for that cable node lost power as well..... But sometimes not. So a UPS + cable modem does not ensure you stay online.

Also... Let me add this....

I love APC. There are a lot of brands of UPS out there... But I bought APC as that's what we have on our servers at work.

MY APC failed 11 months from the time I bought it. APC support was instantaneous, and they sent me an advance replacement that was at my door in two days. It was a brand new unit with new batteries.... So I got a pretty good deal there. Based on my experience with their support, I'd buy another from them.

its too bad to hear that it doesnt guarantee internet will stay up because I just got a UPS for my networking closet to keep the switch/router/modem alive. I guess it still makes sense for powerloss in a transfer but I was really thinking back to when I got my first UPS and had dialup...my power would die and I would be on IRC and had a chance to be like "oh crap...my power just went out"

Luckily...it seems it has been a LONG time since I remember losing power while using the computer...or even at all (though I know it happened a month or two ago when I was out of town)

One of the things i was wanting most was to be able to power my motem and router so i can still be online on my laptop whtich would be able to run about 2-3hrs dependsing on useage. Also want something that would be able to power my desktop and monitor for 5 min or so so i could atleast save any open work or finish any imprtant things atm and properly shut down the computer. Last year we had lots of power problems alot of them where just the power going out for a min or so but farly offen, Ide say our power goes out atleast for a fue mins once every 2 months. then theres times it out for longer or times when it will go out kinda offen for a week or so.

I have dsl, Do you think that would stay active? Theres no other powerd devices before the house that i know of just for dsl, and phones still work(wired) so i dont see why dsl would go down. How long do you think say this UPS could power just a Dsl motem and wireless router?

I have see that one or one vary simmalr on sale for about 50 from time to time.

Also that one has some kind of software that could shut down my pc if i wasent home insted of just turning off. Speaking of whitch how bad is it for a computer to just loose power? becides any lots work.

I just bought an APC 800 RS. It's been discontinued, so I got if for less than $100 w/2 day shipping. I think it's a steal.

DSL is another story..... You stand a much better... FAR better chance of your DSL remaining active during a power outage... so yes, do hook up the DSL modem to that.

Ok cool, Im hopeing tiggerdirect will run that one on sale again for $50 or whatever it was. Do you think that one in the like would de the job and be able to power the motem and router for a decent amount of time?

dont buy from tigerdirect. I have had apc's and currently have belkin which I got on a good deal from compusa about 1year ago, both worked fine, and niether would have any trouble powering a modem/router for a long time, though as was said before if the power is out over a larger area then a cable modem probably wont work.

You are better off buying local depending on shipping cost.... UPS's are heavy after all.

If all you are doing is powering a router and modem, even a modest UPS should power those for potentially the life of your laptop battery......or longer.... Doing a test once you get it shoul dgive you an idea.

Just be sure to run over to a friend's (who has power) with your ups to charge it up again to keep the battery from sulfating too much as well charge your laptop up again.

I have good luck with Cyberpower UPSes from Newegg. Good prices, adequate monitoring software, and they have models available with Automatic Voltage Regulation.
