So I like to put something like this, and have been for over 10 years, when posting anything on craigslist to stop unwanted texts and emails:

Scammers, suck a big one, out of my area code calls and texts will be ignored, I will not ship to XXX using ur XXX carrier because your out of town, and want to send me a check for 1 billion times what Im asking, and I get to keep half of it for my troubles, if I just send you the rest, NOT GONNA HAPPEN! If u are not local to me, then dont waste my time, for this is the only time of mine youre gonna get, is me telling you right now, dont waste mine or your time!!!!!

But I guess now in this day and time, cannot even upset scammers, for my listing was removed shortly after I made it :(
What the crap, hurting feeling of people that would try and take my stuff, and my money, and screw me over big time, is now considered a no no.

I sell on CL all the time and I feel your pain.

Doesn't matter what you are selling or what disclaimers you put in the post, the first 10 replies will always want to wire the money so you can ship to them.

Cash and local pick-up/meet only.

No offense but you're an idiot if you are ignoring out of area code calls.

If anything, IMO, you should prefer people with out of area numbers because people who move for jobs have money to spend.

Why not just put "LOCAL PICKUP CASH ONLY" and just ignore anyone who contacts you asking about other alternatives?

I put that in ALL CAPS on every single post ... makes no difference at all.

I ignore EVERY call from a number not in my contacts and I never check voicemail... sorry but the IRS is not coming to arrest me if I don't send payment in gift-cards and I don't need an extended warranty on my Honda. (etc)

Text, email or go away ... those are your options for reaching me.

Then just ignore.

Or get off CL. That place has been crap for a very long time now.

Facebook Marketplace is where I would sell anything now a days. I've purchased multiple things on there but never sold.

Calls, texts, whatever, Point being area code hasn't been a reliable indicator of physical location for 15 years it's time to get the fuck over yourself.

Believe it or not I still sell more stuff (and more quickly) on CL then on any of the selling apps or flea-bay ... I don't use Facebook or really any social media other then Twitter once in awhile. (unless this place counts)

Dealing with the flakes and scammers just comes with the territory.

I don't "use" Facebook either but the marketplace is great.

Really was more directed at the OP than you. I get not answering unexpected calls. But if you are trying to sell something ignoring out of area code is extremely self defeating.

I've only ever sold our used cars on CL - and overall it was pretty successful. I don't recall receiving much spam either - probably because it would be rather hard to get someone to tow a car to you with title and everything heh.

Facebook isn't bad for buying/selling junk around the house if it's worthy of selling. Personally I have a very strict guidline of if I can't get $50 or more selling the item then it's probably not worth it.

OP, do you really think putting "no scammers!!!" is going to stop scammers from contacting you? You know much of that is automated/done by bots, right?

Meh...those kinds of contacts simply get a "Go fuck yourself," or Fuck off and die" response...and I move along.

And facebook is any bettwer?? Have you really ever tried to sell anything on there? Like, youre selling something for $100, its worth $200, but some asshat offers you $15 and wants you to meet them 3 hours away and never shows up. Or how about you put your location, fulll phone numebr, facebook says where yo are living on the right, and you include a bunch of pics, description, and all, and you get the text of "hey whats yoiur lowest price, location, and can I get some pics of it"?
And look at me all knowing and powerfull, I got to end everything I wring with....

IME calls (on my Google voice dedicated #) from out of area numbers are 99.9% scams unfortunately... of course the same can be said for most in-area calls and this is true of every number I have!

:D

I actually put "text or email only no calls please" in my posts too but its about as effective as "cash & local" is lol.

:( Guess I can never buy from you funboy. I'm in Mem, but have a 903 number. It's great here, as I now know 901 numbers answer. 903 scam :)

Sure it does. I'd guess its more that you give off a vibe of "come see my stuff and you might end up squealing like a piggy in the woods" and so they figure probably not worth it for some used stuff on Craigslist.

You then have never seen my "stuff" before :O :D

drnick, send me a text if you see something you want, and we can meet up in Jackson, but for me Memphis is about 2 1/2 - 3 hours away I think from my little town, so for me to drive that much or half way, 1 would be a bitch for me because I really am disabled, and 2 unless its one hell of a deal I wouldnt put myself through hell for a few days only to make a few buck. Several hundo bucks well then, maybe :)

Last few years has been much better when selling things on Facebook marketplace. Far less scammy there, but you still have to use common sense. I just about stopped selling on CL.
