So the new consoles are able to upscale old games to 1080p and I hear that current 1080p games are not true 1080p.. they are upscaled to 1080p...

Is this even possible to upscale on the PC?

What I mean is that consoles don't lose fps when it moves to a higher resolution, so if we could do this on the PC, that would be like having a new video card.

I beleive consoles do in fact lose some FPS. If you look at some 360 games it wont do 1080p. Some only do 720P at most. I have seen a few games slow down a bit under a higer setting. They are still made to be playable but I have seen slowdown.

isn't 1080 the resolution? PCs can already display at 1200 or more.

PCs can do pretty much any size, lol. Think, 2x 30" monitors for like 5000x3000 or something like that

I'd like a way to do software upscaling of a 2D game. Not sure, software might exist but I've never really searched it out. I have a 2D game called Eschalon that is just a chore to look at since the main window is 800x600 and my desktop res is 2560x1600.

Upscaling exists, it's mostly done with the monitor. Look at the Gateway XHD3000, it scales images up to the 1600p resolution (2560x1600) using a built in high end scaler thing. DVDs and whatever resolution is scaled to make it look great.

I think it does this with all inputs to make it look good on all resolutions.

PC video cards can display a LOT of different resolutions, a few of which are much higher than simple 1080p. The "upscaling" is done mostly by the DISPLAY, so that the screen is filled, even though it's only receiving XXX resolution. PC's don't have the same output limitation that DVD, blu-ray, HD-dvd, or console game systems do.

So, in short, CONSOLE games and movie media devices do have resolution limits, but PC games (and PC's in general) don't really.

Anyway, I don't like the marketing B.S. like "HD" and "1080p". It creates this kind of confusion that you're having.
