UPS/Surge Protectors

I don't know which I should get. Before I even think about what model to buy, I don't know if I should just get a surge protector, or a UPS battery backup w/surge protection. I just want one for the lightning strikes which actually gives a power outage for a second or two, then the power comes back on. I currently have a laptop so that isn't a problem, but when I get a desktop, this could become a problem, as well as my other electronics. So, in order to have some time to properly shut down my computer, or at least have my computer unharmed from these sudden power outages, which do I need? I don't need to have it running for 20mins with a backup battery.

i use one of these

it works well for what i need.. we often times lose power for a few min, this keeps me up and running till it comes back on

Hi, Surge protectors will help protect your system from damage, but will do nothing for keeping you up for any length of time. Not even one nsec. UPS will do what you want, but remember UPS is not so you can keep working, but only to let you shut down without losing that chapter of your BIO you were working on. Good luck, Jim
