Hey guys,

Alright, so building my dream system...quadcore processors, SLI vid cards...probably a 1000W PSU to make it as futureproof in the future as possible... So I thought I'd look into a UPS, and when I e-mailed APC about it, they said this was the lowest unit I can use...

ACK! That's almost as big as the computer and very heavy, not to mention expensive...

Aren't there any smaller/cheaper solutions I could use? I don't even know where I'd put that thing - it certainly isn't gonna fit where my current Back-UPS Pro 650 is. =oP

I'd re-think your PSU requirements. I think you will find 650 watts to be plenty. But it is not wattage that you should be concerned about; it is the actual amperage available on the 12V rails which is important. Determine what amperage the two cards will require at the manufacturer's site. And don't buy for future proofing. No one has any idea what future components will require. Buy what you need to adequately run your dream system NOW. If a single large UPS is too expensive, use your current one for the monitor and whatever and a similar size one for your PC only.

Well, you have started your research, so my comments are only meant to encourage more.

Was looking at this one too:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16842101125

But ooooh...that looks like a nice one, and I like the LCD - that may actually be a much better choice for me - thanks for the suggestion! And really, all I need connected to the actual backup protection is the computer itself and the monitor - the rest can go on separate power. I may have to consider that - thanks for the suggestion!

And I appreciate the info about considering a smaller one - I think I was way oversold as I'm realizing PSU wattage does NOT mean you need a UPS *that* big. (I'm also considering a slightly smaller PSU now).

Really appreciate all the help!

heh - didn't notice that (about the plug). Funny! WAY more than I needed! =oP That thing would have been almost as big as the computer and is wayyy too pricey.

Yeah, I'm going to go with one of the two LCD units - they just look way too cool. 1300 would probably be enough but I may go with the 1500 just to be safe (with an 850w PSU). Though unfortunately the Trade-UPS program puts me RIGHT below the level where I can get that one, but I'm hoping if I call them they'll consider it.
