Background: Had one of my Seagate drives fail on me. Drive was under warranty, and was shipped back to Seagate. Seagate shipped out a replacement via UPS. They want a signature. Got a notice from UPS left on my door for their first delivery attempt, apparently they need a person to sign for the package. Signing the back of the notice, as I usually do, won't suffice. I work 2p-10p, UPS delivers between 3p and 5p. Unless they can delivery before 11a, I'll never be home to sign for the package. I live alone. Its not an apartment complex. And my relationship with my neighbors is limited to a friendly wave.

Seems like a lot of hoops to jump through to replace a 500GB drive, but there you go. Haven't been able to call their CS yet. Anyone ever dealt with this situation before?

Can you go to the packaging place and pick it up directly? With fedex I wrote a note asking to waive the requirement to sign and wrote my tracking number + signed it. They left the package, but when I called before the lady I talked to said it was the drivers discretion to follow it and it was fedex so who knows if it'd work for ups.

Not sure. The distribution office's location may not be compatible with where I live and where I work. I intend to call them when I get off work today, but I was curious if anyone's been in this situation before and what they did.

I have a spare drive_160GB) that I could put into my main desktop, but it takes some time to install Win7, update, install basic programs, etc, just to have to do it all over again when the replacement drive(500GB) comes.

Get a mailbox rental with Postal Annex, UPS Store, etc, never miss a package again.

I always tell them to leave it at the distribution hub and I go pick it up at lunch or on my way home.

i delt with a similar situation with FedEx, i had to call their corporate office and berate them for about an hour before i got my package

paid for 2 day shipping, took over 2 weeks because of it

wasn't fedexs fault, the sender had the moronic policy and they wouldn't do anything about it. bitching at fedex was my only real option

When I lived in an apt, I rented a PO box at the cheapest place I coould find. They signed for all my orders and I could pick up at my convenience. It did cost me 180 a year though.

Which is why I don't want that. :p

This isn't something thats common, usually I can just sign the delivery notice and they leave the package the next business day. For a hard drive I could replace for relatively cheap, I'm not overly worried about it getting stolen.

If I was getting a few grand of computer hardware, I'd definitely pick it up at the distro hub. :p
