UPS Lost my Package

Me and Mpitts are involved in a transaction for his Linksys WRT54G router. Due to original complications, he felt obligated to overnight it to to me through UPS.

He sent it on September 27th via UPS Overnight. He told me he shipped it on the 29th and asked if I had received it yet. I said, no, and told him this is the page I got:
Status: Billing Information Received
Shipped to: SAN JOSE, CA, US
Shipped or Billed on: Sep 27, 2005

Tracking Number: 1Z YV5 227 13 9096 744 7
Service Type: NEXT DAY AIR SAVER
Weight: 1.00 Lb
Note: UPS has received shipper's billing information electronically. Billing information received does not indicate shipment pickup or drop-off. Please contact the shipper for more details.
He told me he dropped it off at his UPS store and he'll see what happened. Now, Next Day Air isn't cheap and the fact it was taking more than a day is an instant refund.

Mpitts tells me today that he got nothing from UPS and that they seemed to have "no record of the package." I checked the tracking number again today and it now tells me it wasn't a valid tracking #.

They obviously had a log of it. Pitts is busy, so what can I do, the receiver, to get my package and get his money back? I understand insurance is free up to $100, so we should be able to get $100 + shipment fee from UPS, correct?

That's only if you two can prove that UPS took your package...

I have that page in my cache, is that proof enough? I bet he has the receipt, but who knows, it's from two weeks ago. If he paid by CC, then that would be proof. And shouldn't they have a record of all their transactions?

It could be that Mpitts just sent them an email saying he will be shipping a package.
I doubt that. Mpitts is an honest trader, I don't think someone with heat of 100+ would be playing me like this.

Happened to me from different companies.

Those are companies with automated emailing/shipping systems. mpitts is a person. Quite the difference.

Does he have proof of shipping (receipt)?

If he can give you this, then there's no reason why there shouldn't be a tracking number listed online.

Edit: Note: UPS has received shipper's billing information electronically

That would make me very curious

Why would have the tracking # shown up before though?

This seems like a very elaborate ploy to waste my time.

He's already refunded my money. I'm out nothing but time, and the potential for a free router.

Read my edit. Also I believe UPS reserves tracking numbers, I am not sure.

From my understanding, he has paid online or shipped online and they are waiting for a package to be picked up.

I read your edit. I still think if he was playing me, he wouldn't have done so for almost two months. I mean, he has nothing to gain by pretending he sent it.

Read original post. He said he dropped it off at his UPS Store.

Well say he works in an office he can generate a tracking number for a package..whether it was actually shipped is another story. I.e. you can set your package all up. print out a package slip, pay electronically, and it will have a tracking number.

I too doubt that a person w/ 100+ heat would mes with you though so..look into it..

I agree with you wholeheartedly. But it just doesn't make sense.

Read original post. He said he dropped it off at his UPS Store.

The tracking number you had listed specifically said that the information was received electronically. I don't know how accurate that information is though.

This is what he said:
Hey man,

I don't have a receipt because I printed the label at home through my online account. Basically what UPS is telling me is that they will refund the amount it cost to ship (~$35) but that they can't reimburse me the $100 minimum that was stated as the value since they have no record of being in possession of the package.

I don't know exactly what happened, but my guess is that either my package was never scanned in at the UPS store or the package walked out of the store. I have dropped off a ton of packages at this store before and the guys that work there know me quite well. I don't think they did anything funny with the package.

Yeah, a real fun ride for me. I just want this to be done with and behind me. I feel horrible for holding you up and I am really not getting any help from UPS (shocker).
I'm pissed, either someone is getting negative feedback or UPS is getting me my router.

I guess you can leave a package at UPS, one of their workers can take it and then UPS has no obligation to reimburse you for your loss? If I call them up, will I get anywhere?

why? I see that often, if I am paying for and printing the shipping label online. Is there something I am missing?

They are saying that you could print it out online, pay for it online and "pretend" to drop it at the UPS store.

I doubt mpitts would do this.
