UPS... Is there one that you can get that WON'T beep?!

I originally had an APC 500VA UPS that backed up my 19" monitor, computer (with 4 hard drives), cable modem, and wireless router. It worked fine - except it had only about 1.5 minutes worth of battery backup. My power usually goes out for about 5-10 minutes.

So, I went out and bought a 1000VA Energizer UPS. I used it to back up my computer, cable modem, and router while the APC backs up the monitor. After being woken up 3 different times when my power goes out (quite often in FL - thunderstorms), I set out trying to figure out a way to make the UPS not beep (short of physically pulling out the speaker).

I got in on one of the hot deals for the Belkin 800VA at Office Depot. It also beeps. The only UPS that doesn't beep constantly when the power is out is the APC. It beeps once when the power goes out and it beeps again when the power goes on. But, it doesn't beep the entire time the power is out.

Is APC the only manufacturer that makes UPS's that don't beep constantly (or have an option to turn the beeping off) when the power goes out? So far, I cannot find the option for the Belkin anywhere. Energizer's website states that the beeping cannot be turned off in XP.

If the power goes out often enough for this to be a problem, I'd seriously consider moving somewhere else.

The ones we have at work, you can disable the beeping with a button on the front. I'll have to look at the brand tommorrow.

open it up and cut the beeper leg.

Better yet, put a switch on it. Then you can switch it off when you go to bed, turn it on in the morning so you'll have the benefit of the beep during your waking hours.

I think the APC unit has software options to turn off the audible alarms. Perhaps your other models have them as well.
