Hi,
I've been trying to read up on UPS's and I can't seem to find a good definition of what "instant on" is. Does anyone have a good site that explains this or can someone break it down in the forum?

Also, I'm looking at getting a 600W; my pc has an Antec Truepower 550W, and I have one Viewsonic VP191B. This should be enough correct?

Much appreciated

Where did you find the term "instant on"? I don't think I've heard it used when talking about UPS's before.

Hi, About 20 yrs ago + our engineers were putting UPS's in our point of sale computers along with 8 kinda large Gates wet cells. Their design watched the AC sine wave at the intput. The first one that came along below about 100 volts was noted and ignored. If the next one sagged the UPS immediately switched to battery. There was no DC to AC conversion here, the machine ran on the batteries. I guess they might have called that Instant On. These guys finally quit and went into business making UPS devices. Not sure this is the same thing, but just might be. Jim

Oopers:

I think what you are talking about is AVR. Short for "Automatic Voltage Regulation".

Basically, this is a process whereby the UPS has the capability of cleaning up the incoming AC power from your wall socket protecting your computer from both power SHORTFALLS(i.e. brownouts) and also from power overages. This is definately a feature that you want on a UPS. Otherwise, you are only getting protection from major power spikes.

"MOST", but not all, modern day UPS units have this feature built in. I know the Belkins units that I use have it. Just ask whoever you buy your unit from if it has Automatic Voltage Regulation.

Good luck.

Ok, fair enough. That being the case, I'm looking in the 150 dollar range, correct? Maybe Belkin is cheaper, but looking for 600W APC UPS's with AVR I see them not being so inexpensive

I use this APC unit. It's compusa, but that's not a bad price right now.

I have all kinds of strage power issues at my place and this unit has handled everything, including over- and undervoltage, blackouts and electrical nosie. It's nice to have some solid protection backing you up.

Any information about that UPS having a connected power warranty? The only one I'm seeing on APC's site is $250. I'm guessing the warranty is what costs so much, $250k. But I can help but think that a warranty like that is a good thing.

I use that same UPS as Rike and I really like it. You mean like a $$ guarantee? All APC's have them, just rated at different amounts.

Oopers:

Do a google search for Belkins UPS.

I think you will find the 1200 VA models from about $99 to $125.

Get the Belkins, you will find that you will like it better than the APC. I have used both and I much prefer the Belkins.

I saw the Belkin, I didn't see the warranty listed on one of the sites I checked though. I'll try to wade through Belkins site to find it. Thanks
